Have this engine, 800 hours. Last weekend the engine sprung a water leak at the top of the engine. -. It wasn't a hose, it was a crack that developed in the block ! Almost a perfect circle about 1/2 inch wide. The mechanic blamed this on a flaw in the original casting of the block.
Ever hear of this. Obviously, no warranty.
The mechanic suggested a welder to try and seal the hole which only affects the cooling system.
Otherwise , this is now a parts engine. The starboard engine, the same age, works fine, (so Far)'
Any thoughts or suggestions ??
Thanks.

how hard would it be to get a welder to get to it to weld it up?
welding and electronics do not get along, so make sure to remove what you can before welding if you can find someone to give it a shot

Instead of a casting flaw I would suspect that it was corrosion that caused the hole. The other block may be along as well, given enough time.

Some weld the block with a TIG welder. Some JBWeld or epoxy the hole in the block. Some will tap the hole and insert a plug.

Depending on the location of the hole, you could consider sanding and prepping the area and apply a gob of JB Weld…let it cure, sand it and paint it. Of course it could possibly leak some a few years down the road in which case you could patch it again….I’ve used JB weld in the past with great success….

Thanks for all input. I am having the boat trailered to a local airport for a welder, who welds aluminum on airplanes. Charge for the weld is $300. I am going to give it a try. Will let you all know how it goes.
Also, corrosion is also a factor as the boat is used in salt water. Still an odd place for this to happen IMO.

update. The welder patched up the hole in the engine block. It now works well. Cost $300 for the weld. Some parts on the outside of the engine block were replaced as well, due to the salt water that was sprayed when the leak developed.
