I am re-powering my old 1993 115 2 stroke. Looking for opinions on new Yamaha's.

My long time yamaha mechanic buddy says...... stay simple - save money up front and get the 150 2-stroke TXRD. He says its a work horse like my old 93 115. No timing belt, more horse power, in the very long run -will last longer with much less expensive repairs and up keep. Which means less he has to do for me, at half price :D

Of course all my other buddy's think I should get the 4-stroke. They of course are not mechanics and simply belief less noise, less gas, more better .......

I dont see much on this board concerning 150 2-stroke good or bad ?? Thanks in advance.

Re: Yamaha 150 2-stroke vs 150 4-stroke

Ask your Yamaha buddy what a 100 hr service costs and a 500 hour service costs on each motor, just so there won't be any surprises later. If weight is an issue on your boat, look into that. Ask about fuel consumption of a 150 HPDI vs a 150 4 stroke -- even though the 150 4 stroke is only a 4 cylinder. If the 150 4 stroke is as powerful as a 150 2 stroke, how come the 150 4 stroke has to have a 2:1 gear ratio and the 150 2 stroke has a 1.86:1?

Re: Yamaha 150 2-stroke vs 150 4-stroke

The 2-stroke in question is not the HPDI - just the regular old school 150 TXRD 2-stroke.

I fish very shallow flats and need a big time jump out of the holes. From what I have read, the 2-stroke will provide all I need in this regard. The boat is a 21 ft Kenner Bay

I guess its really a money up front issue, as I am convinced both are excellent motors. I am not certain but I have heard the 4-strokes cost about $3000 more up front. Thats a lot of fuel.

Decisions, decisions. Had to do this with a truck once, not fun (Tundra or Titan) I certainly could have worse problems.

IMHP the current and future price of fuel makes it hard NOT to look at the different brands of EFI 2 stroke

It is not DIY friendly anymore BUT the EFI motors seem to be much better on fuel compared to there carb counterparts

I pulled the trigger on the 2-stroke. My previous top end with a 115 was 35 Mph. Per water test yesterday with the 150 2-stroke was 55 mph. I am very very happy. Gets on a plane instantly. I will now just have to get a third job to pay for the fuel.........

I'm looking to justify swapping out my 225 2 stroke for a 4 stroke and was told by several converts that they are getting 35-40% better fuel mileage with the 4 stroke over a carbed 2 stroke.

Depending on how much fuel you use a year it would take long to justify the difference with gas at $3 a gallon. In my case the pay back would be realized in less than 2 years.

Re: Yamaha 150 2-stroke vs 150 4-stroke

For larger boats, I think it is a no brainer -- go with the 4-stroke. My buddy just repowered an older Grady White with a 225 Suzuki 4-stroke replacing a very old Johnson 2-stroke. Holy @#$%# what a difference in gas mileage. I mean phenominal !!

Without the new motor, with todays gas prices, he would be sitting at the dock throwing a cast net to catch fish.

He also averages about 60 miles a trip. I, on the other hand, fish mainly inshore, so I am not running nearly as much.

The Yamaha website (using side by side comparsions) claims the 150 2-stroke matches the 4-stroke at 4000 RPMS, my cruising speed. Anyone out there have experience with newer 150 2-stroke & 4 stroke? Do they really compare at 4000 RPM? I do realize at lower RPMS the 4 stroke gets twice as much effeciency.....

I don't have much experiance at that level of power but a johnson 70hp carb 2 stroke and johnson 70hp EFI 4stroke (suzuki built) have both been on my boat. At a 3500rpm cruise speed I Use about 50% less gas with the 4 stroke (2.5 gallons an hour compared to about 4 gallons an hour) running across a 22+ mile lake. Trolling is about 300% BETTER (2 gallons in 8 hours vs. 6 gallons in 8 hours) and WOT is about 20% better. (6 gallons an hour vs. 7.5 gallons an hour). Top end speed is identical and the whole shots were very close with the 2 stroke being a bit faster out of the hole (100# lighter)

Re: Yamaha 150 2-stroke vs 150 4-stroke

this happens all the time, you CANNOT compare an old carby 2 stroke to a new 4 stroke and say a sweeping statement like the 4 stroke gets 30% better fuel economy than a 2 stroke, of course it does, you are cpmparing old technology to new, try the comparison with a new 2 stoke like (say) an etec and see if there is a difference, over a range of operating ranges and speeds, the two will almost be identical in cost to run and maintain, the 4 stroke needs oil changed and thrown away, the 2 stroke burns it, one needs valves and so on adjusted one does not, BUT over a few years the true "cost of ownership" will be almost the same. it is just a fact of life, if someone has a 4 stroke it is the best thing made (thats why you bought it!) and vice versa a new 2 stroke, I don't care how many people say "but I have a XXX and it .... over time it will even out, end of story!! the true factor in purchase should be a good reliable dealer, with a good workshop with good techs, good customer service and be reasonably near by to you.

i guess thats why OMC went bankrupt no one cares for speed anymore they are just worried about saving money on gas if thats all you want then buy the 4 stroke

Um, he ASKED about a new 150hp CARBED two stroke Vs. New 150hp EFI 4 stroke, which is why we responded as such since he wanted an opinion on both.

Noelm............ you nailed it.

I wanted highest performance, got it.

I wanted to buy from a reliable dealer who was close with superb service, got it.

I wanted to save money up front with tried and true, old school, dont fix what aint broke, less complex, getter done technology, got it.

Would I buy a 4-stroke by the flip of a coin next time? Absolutely, and would love it for different reasons. All I really want to do is catch grouper, either one will work - well as long as its Yamaha :D

Re: Yamaha 150 2-stroke vs 150 4-stroke

Ok, I did my initial breakin (1st hour/ 2nd hour) on the Yami 150 2-stroke on Friday. I could not believe how quiet this motor is compared to my old Yami 115. Is this cuz its new, just better technology / noise insulation etc?

I ran a total of 70 miles on 18 gallons = 3.88 mpg Which I was very pleased with. Thats running double oil, not sure if that affects gas mileage or not. What could I have expected from a 4 stroke -- 5 mpg or better?

Performance, all I can say is WOW. Obviously could only hit WOT once towards end of breakin. Figured out I cant have things unsecured on the deck !! 50 mph is plenty for me. Out of the hole, almost instant plain.

The new Hydraulic steering...... like butta !!

Extremely happy Yammi owner once again at a very affordable price !!!
