My 1988 130 Yamaha cuts out on me when I put her in gear. The engine runs noticably rougher when I remove plug wires from the starboard side but no difference when I pull the plug wires off the port side upper or lower. A compression check gives a reading around 120 on each cyl. I don't believe I'm getting fuel to the port side cyls, but the shop says the carbs are fine. Plenty of spark all around. What gives? Any ideas???

Re: Yamaha 130

Howdy, MABrown.

Usually the cylinders on one side share ignition parts, while cylinders on top or bottom share a carb.

See what happens if you spray or squirt some fuel mix into each carb when it is running. It is possible for one barrel of a carb to get gummy, but it would be very unusual for each carb to do the same thing at the same time.

Even though you get spark on all four, I suspect that you will, in the end, find the problem in the ignition system.

Good luck. :)

Re: Yamaha 130

Thanks for the reply. I took the carbs to the shop. The shop said they were fine, but cleaned them up real well. Put them back on and the engine fired right up. All 4 cyls. This happened last summer, except I cleaned them up, trying to save a few $$$. I am wondering if heat is breaking down the ingition system after sustained running, but I was getting spark to all 4 cyls before having the carbs cleaned. Any insights.
