I have a 1999 Yamaha 130 saltwater version that will top out at only 5400 with a 14 x 14 pitch prop on a 18 foot Avocet (flats with a tunnel and about 2200# loaded). The prop guru thinks that the computer module is retarding the ignition advance and preventing it from topping out. The engine runs fine otherwise, but I was thinking that I should be able to run a higher pitch prop. I need help from you Yamaha experts or the name of a good mechanic or shop near San Antonio, Texas.

14 X 14?? What kind of prop? What speeds are you seeing?

The engine should run anywhere between 5000-6000 rpm. Some people like to run up at 6000, but there's nothing wrong with 5400 if it's performing the way you want.

Try the 13 1/2 X 14 Stainless. It should give you 26-34 mph and more rpm. Or the 13 5/8 X 13 will give you 24-31. Heck, the 13 1/2 X 15 might even be ideal at 29-36 mph.

The prop is a custom made stainless cleaver style 4 blade designed to bite in less than a foot of water. The top speed is about 34 mph.

Speed seems ok and you're in the correct rpm range.

But if you want more, you could try cutting the diameter down 1/4" and re-cup (to keep the bite), or drop pitch to 13. You may not lose mph dropping pitch, and may even pick up a mph or so with the right cupping. ;)
