Yamaha 115 ob blown rod

I have experience helping rebuild 2 auto engines so I'm thinking about tackling a YAMAHA 115 ob with a blown connecting rod. The boat, motor and trailer are FREE. The owner says it blew a rod, I don't know more than that yet.

My questions are.
1- is there any tricks to seeing if the crank is bad before pulling the powerhead OFF the motor? or can this be done without pulling the powerhead OFF at all?
2- is there even a chance a rod can snap and the crank still be good?

Otherwise I'm going to part out the motor and buy another used motor. This has power trim/tilt and is otherwise clean. I see so far new parts are available (rod, piston, gaskets $250+) and if possible would be worth the shot of a first outboard rebuild.

All I know so far is its a Yamaha 115 1991 or so 2 stroke

An 81 is really old.
You sure that you wanna spend a bunch of $ on such an old motor?
If so then try to take the carb and reeds off and look into the crank case.
Take pictures as you go cause they have a lot of hoses and lines going all over.
That way it will be easier to put back.
Not a hard job.Just hope the broken rod didn't do and damage to the block?
Word to the wise, don't list your e-mail.

Re: Yamaha 115 ob blown rod

The boat is an 91'(posted 1981 in error) and the owner said the motor should be around the same......so I honestly don't know exactly YET. I'm just trying to get a few ideas/words of advice on what to look into later when I pick up the boat and get it into my shop. The reeds will let me see the rod? I know I wont be able to see the crank until I remove the rod from it but I would like to know if I'm wasting my time or not as soon as i can.

I always take a lot of pictures....the old memory aint what it used to be :)

Took the advice about e mail ;)

Re: Yamaha 115 ob blown rod

usually when a rod goes it slings around and damages other things.
Will have to take apart to see what all is wrong

Good experience for a first timer to tear apart a motor you do not have to worry about things when they break,
only cost is your time to take apart and a service manual will help

Good advice.....I am looking for a practice motor as we speak lol

I also plan to invest in the service manual IF I decide to proceed and keep the motor.

Maybe you can find/buy a good/running motor of similar HP, 2stroke, same year....then keep your broken motor for spare parts in the future?....that could be really nice going forward!....

Hey Eddie,
I might be interested in the lower unit and prop if you end up parting it out. I have a 1989 Yamaha 115hp with a jet lower unit, and have been looking around for a prop unit for maximum flexibility. If you end up not fixing it up, let me know!
Thanks,
Ken
