Yamaha 115 4 stroke oil pressure

Hello,
I have just bought a new 2003 Alumacraft pre-rigged with a Yamaha 115 4 stroke. It has the Alumacraft gauges in the dash, not the Yam' gauges. When I turn on the ignition I would expect the buzzer to sound indicating there is no oil pressure and I would expect the buzzer to cease as soon as the motor starts indicating there is oil pressure. The buzzer is silent! The selling dealer tells me this is normal, that the buzzer will only sound if the oil pressure fails while the motor is running.I have called at least 6 other dealers and have got 4 different answers when I ask "Should the buzzer sound when I turn on the ignition?" My fear is that if I never hear the buzzer how would I ever know it hasn't failed?

The alarm system is not like an automotive one. There is a delay built into the system when you turn the key on to prevent the obnoxious buzzing when its not needed. If I remember correctly, its around 30 seconds after you turn the key to on.

Re: Yamaha 115 4 stroke oil pressure

hello
I have never heard of the delay on a yamaha but then engineering fails to tell us a lot of things. one of the 4 versions that I am currently aware of for the f100,f115 alarm system will not work until the rpm crosses 1800 to 2000 rpm. dumbest alarm I ever saw but yammi says its the way it works.
to test the alarm use a jumper wire from the oil pressure switch pink wire to a block/engine ground. turn on the key switch and check for alarms. if no alarms then start the engine and check for alarms. if no alarms slowly increase the rpm and note what rpm the alarm sounds.it should sound below 2000 rpm if it does not there is a problem. only took me 2 hours of trouble shooting a motor I was doing a PDI on last year to find that the dumb bass engineer had made such a system. anyway if your system is this type just remember that if you start the motor at an idle you have no low oil pressure alarms.
good luck and post back and let us know

Re: Yamaha 115 4 stroke oil pressure

Well,
there is definately no "delay" mode. I had the key in the on position for about 1 minute and nothing happened. I talked to the Alumacraft Rep' and he says the buzzer is silent until there is a problem when the motor is running. I also spoke with Yamaha Marine who (grudgingly) told me the buzzer should sound when the key is turned to the on position! I'm done pursuing this through "official" channels ...I will test ground the buzzer so I know it works and then I'm going to add a tee to the oil pressure sender connection and put in another automotive style sender and an L.E.D on the dash...turn key, light comes on...start motor...oil pressure comes up...light goes off!!! Thanks for input guys, all I can say is be careful who you ask, I have had a different opinion from just about all the Yamaha/alumacraft folks I've talked to. Thanks...W
P.S. you might find this amusing, when I talked to Yamaha Marine and I told them that I was getting conflicting information from the various dealers they told me " then go with the dealer who is giving you the answer you want to hear"!

Hello
arcwinston.
while your playing with the alarm please test it as I described and see if it works when the switch is closed(bypassed with jumper wire) and the engine is above 1800 or so rpm. most dealers have no clue about this and even some tech reps dont. yamaha school at kennesaw GA did not even know it. I found doing a pre-delivery inspection and part of it calls to test the low oil alarm. shows how many of those sheets get gun-decked :) :)
good luck and keep posting

ARCWINSTON,

Listen to what rodbolt is telling you.

I would not modify or add anything to the system. If you do, and it fails, you're paying the bill, not Yamaha.

There was a response to your question that said that the Yam guages don't give you a telltale noise either.

No offense, but I think you're being too cautious.
I would be more concerned with water pressure.

Hello again
yep listen to DJohns19. over temp usually gives a bit of warning if it is due to normal pump wear or filling with mud due to a grounding. I have been doing auto-marine work for 30 years. I have never heard it say the low oil pressure light lit and I cut it off. its always it was running fine and just died. usually alarms tell you the engine just blew and its time to buy beer not bait.
good luck and keep posting :)

Re: Yamaha 115 4 stroke oil pressure

I know I'm being a bit paranoid about this oil pressure buzzer thing! Part of me desperately wants to trust the warning system. Another part of me, (the professional mechanic and engine builder of nearly 40 years)feels that this system has a very basic design flaw. I readily take your point about modifying the system, always dangerous ground.I have always been frustrated by those who ask my advice and then ignore it when I tell them something they didn't really want to hear....I wouldn't have sought you guys' counsel unless I thought you could help me so I will test the buzzer as Rodbolt suggests and then I'm going to trust the Yamaha engineers...after all if I didn't think they built a good product I wouldn't have bought it! Thanks guys...W
One more thing, before I asked my initial question I went back over all the posts for the last year and could find no other question on this subject, I would have thought it would have come up before. Maybe I am more paranoid than I thought!!!

Re: Yamaha 115 4 stroke oil pressure

Yamaha service clinic notes say there is a delay in the oil warning system because if the oil foams up a bit, the alarm will constantly go on and off. Yamaha also increased the oil pressure sender PSI in the last year or so to alert the boaters who let their oil level drop too low so they will get an alarm sooner. Pontoon boats were the worst offenders because they are akward to reach over and remove the cover to check the oil.

If other make gauges instead of Yamaha's digitals are used, they may not operate the warning systems correctly. Short out your temp sender as there is no delay, and make sure the alarm sounds with the key on. If not, see your dealer and get it operational.
