Okay, here's one for you...
I am getting ready to purchase a Hurricane Fundeck GS 201 (Godfrey deck boat) for family skiing, fishing & cruising. Most dealers around here are packaging this boat with a Yammy 115. Now read this carefully... on the 115, the dealer is offering it with a 2004 4 stroke (of course) with 3 yr. factory warranty OR 2003 2 stroke with 5 year factory warranty for $1,300 less. He says he is throwing in the extra 3 years to move out 2003 2 strokes. Which would you choose? BTW, specs on boat are 20 feet long, rated up to 200hp. I understand the basic benefits of both motors, but that 3 years of extra Yammy warranty has got me hesitatin'. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

FB,

Regardless of which 115 you choose, you will be disapointed.

Deck boats are heavy (they collect people and stuff) and a 115 on that size boat will be a marginal performer.

Talk to the dealer about something in the 150 to 175 hp. class. 2 or 4 stroke.

Both of these Yamaha 115's are excellent outboards. I own both. Great performers and great economy. Chances are you'll never need warranty work.

Personally, I'd spend the $1300 for the 4-stroke. You won't be sorry. The 2-stroke is carbed and the 4-stroke is fuel injected, dual overhead cams, etc. Better starts, better fuel economy, quieter, smoother, and just plain more enjoyable to own.

FB,

I agree the 115 is too little power for a 20ft deck boat. If you want to fish or casually cruise around it might meet your purposes but once you put some people on board or try to pull a tube or a skier, you will wish you had more ponies.

Have you thought of looking at Yamaha's new 150hp four stroke?

Kevin

Re: YAMAHA 115 2 STROKE vs. 4 STROKE

I have sea tested the Hurricane GS201 with the 115 2 stroke and it flies. However, the boat was not loaded, only three people, so I will check the Hurricane website for test reports on a larger motor. I am really more concerned with opinons on 4 stroke with the 5 year warranty vs. 4 stroke with 3 year warranty.
I have two oher Yammy 2 stroke motors, and they are very dependable and seem very simple in design. My concern is the many moving parts and complicated design of the 4 stroke motor. I am hoping these 4 strokes are not going to be disasters in a few years, kind of like the early generations of digital cell phones, which were heavily touted but sounded like crap. From what I have read, Yamaha has done some pretty new and revolutionary stuff with their 4 stroke, some of it unproven technology. I am not a mechanic, so reliability is the most important element to me. If my 2 strokes don't start (which is rarely) I just drain the fuel out of the carb and pop in some new plugs. I trust the Yamaha folks, but I noticed in their brochure even they admit the 2 stroke is better for some applications. Ideally, I would like to seatest this boat with both motors. If anyone has done that, please let me know. At any rate, I value your thoughts, and happy boating to all.
