The best guess according to the dealer/service dept. is that oil wasn't getting into one of the cylinders for some reason, which caused it to overheat. They don't know why that might have happened but they don't suggest a lot of investigation so long as it is out of warranty.

Its evident that the service department doesn't have much gray matter between their ears. Any outboard mechanic can easily tell if the cause was oil or fuel. Melted crown of piston is caused by lean fuel burn. Blued bearings, oil. Yamaha has one of the best oiling systems on the market and can be called bulletproof. Anything small enough to get thru the screen in the engine tank, has plenty of room to get thru the oil pump and lines. Someone is blowing smoke up your behind because if the dealer was on your side, he would determine the cause. Bet they're trying to sell ya another engine.
