yam 85 lower unit crack

my friend has 1987 yam 85hp and the lower unit has developed a crack from prop back about 3 inches. this happened once before and lower unit was changed. is this a common thing with this engine. can it be welded in place as its not gone back as far as seals this time or is this another one for the bin. apart from this the engine is a real nice reliable engine . please help as he is driving me mad. coz its me who told him to but it in first place. phill

also is there any other engines that use the same lower unit, or one that will fit this engine from a different make ie suzi/ merc johnson etc. as said its a 85 hp yamaha ptt

Had same problem,I was told that the ring nut that holds prop shaft bearing housing needs to be removed and salt corrosion flushed away it expands and cracks hub behind prop takes special yamaha tool to remove you may be able to have it welded if its not to bad.I purchased new lower unit and keep corrosion x sprayed in threads .GOOD LUCK
