I'm about to get a new computer and DSL connection, since my wife is about to go back to graduate school.

We currently have AOL dial-up, which is way too slow for her on-line class requirements. I've never really been impressed at all with AOL anyway, after using it for about 4 years. The connectivity is extremely unreliable, but I have to admit, I like their interface and the on-line live support is very good.

The Verizon DSL service comes with a choice of Yahoo or MSN Premium.

It would be very helpful if anyone has any opinions on which they prefer, Yahoo or MSN?

Thanks.

omc,
Any preferences of one over the other, what you like/don't like?

Things like e-mail, browsing the net, do you use instant messaging etc.?

By the way, I grew up not that far from you in the Adirondacks, been to Old Forge a few times. Chazy Lake's where I do my boating.

I have verizon DSL but use google as my homepage. You can set any page as the home page regardless of service. Then I use MSN hotmail and Google Gmail for my mail servers. I tend to hate all the extra garbage listed on homepages.

Bob

I really prefer MSN (don't know why) and use MSN messenger every day to keep track of my adult kids.

Lakelover, they are both free and you can download them both right now and try them out.

As much as possible I stay away from Yahoo because of the beacons they may put on your computer. Over the last couple of years a lot of groups left Yahoo because of it, and because whenever Yahoo would change their policy they would wipe out your preference settings that disallow beacons and spam and other stuff like that. Yahoo’s change in operating procedures was followed by a huge jump in their profit earnings, i.e. capitalizing on targeted marketing info. Yahoo is first and foremost a marketing venue. Information, email accts, and groups was/is a way to build their database. Google is headed that way, too. Microsoft has been trying to go that way for years, teaming up with NBC news, Intel, and a host of other companies to build MS’s marketing database.

I will occasionally setup a Yahoo email acct just to initiate email contact (like on the iboats forums) then I let that Yahoo acct sunset and never use that email name again.

I’m new to Gmail, like it a lot, so far.

I can sure relate to that! There's very little that I find useful on most homepages.

I remembered why I like msn messenger better.
With msn if someone comes on line to talk to you a little flag pops up down at the bottom and you can click on it or wait if your busy and with yahoo when someone pms you it pops up in the middle of the screen. For instance if I was typing this reply to iboats (I have to look at the key board) and yahoo messenger popped up, everything I typed after that would go on the yahoo message instead of iboats reply.

Why use any portal at all. Its only there to get you to look at their advertising. And by using their search engines, you will be steered toward their "partners", and other alternative sites will appear on page 23.

Set up an email account, then use iboats as your homepage, if you must have one.

OK, bear with me here...Not sure I understand the difference/relationship between: portal & browser.

One thing I'm looking for is a good functional easy-to-use email interface too.

I use Roadrunner as my homepage because it has lots of news and info on it. I also use roadrunner as my main email address. I use msn as my secondary email address and messenger service.
