After many questions, I took my Wife's birthday NetBook back to BestBuy. I was all but ready to pop for an IPad 1 at $459.00. Turns out that the battery is only good for about 2 years and then you throw the tablet in the trash. That is pretty expensive for a toy whether it is used daily or occasionally. Heck, if my RazrM battery gives up the ghost in two years, I only paid $80 for it and I need it and use it daily. A tablet would not get that kind of use or be as necessary as a phone.

They told me that this was the case with all of the tablets. As I stood in the store, with my credit card at the ready, I found myself unable to overcome this hurdle so I took a refund on the NetBook and walked out of the store, empty handed.

Replace your iPad Wi-Fi's internal lithium battery.

Just like the iPods and mac minis of the past, the batteries were non replaceable, until someone figured out how to do it and started posting instructions and selling batteries.

It's just not worth it apparently for Apple to replace batteries, they give you a new ipad if the battery fails.

I do know that a local Apple reseller/authorized service center will actually replace the batteries, but not under warranty.

Apple will replace batteries for $179, out of warranty. Ain't they nice.

It's all planned obsolescence. Or we have a way to take all your money and you'll smile while we do it.

On top of the $459.00 for the IPad 1, I could have purchased a $249, 3 year policy that would insure against damage and replace the IPad if the battery performance dipped below 50%. Adding it all up, that was way too much for something that was a toy; a lark, if you will.

Roscoe, I will check out your link. Thanks.

I used to keep my flip phones so long that I would go thru about 3 different batteries before the phone would die. There is no reason that these tablets should not be the same.

To start with, I would not touch an Ipad with a ten foot pole, second, the rest of the tablets on the market are quite easy to change the battery out in, I just did one last night for a buddy of mine, took about 10 minutes. I consider Apple, just as bad as Microsoft when it comes to their branded products, I am much happier with my generic tablets. I just bought another Android today, cost less than a hundred bucks, sitting here surfing and watching videos on it while I type on the laptop.

Well MT, give me some names. One of the reasons that I was looking at IPads was that I heard that they were a good choice for the techno sensitive, ie, my wife.

I am thrilled with my Lenovo tablet, this thing is rock solid and comes with any app you could ever think of, in addition, for about $10 you can put a micro SD 32 gig card in it and really do some rock and rolling, the one I have, has 3G cell service, GPS, N Wifi and I paid $139.00 for it, it is a 7" tablet, but they offer the same features in a 10" model for less than $200.00. It is not a difficult tablet to use, I also like the built in Kindle reader, so I have the best of all worlds.

The one I picked up today, for less than a hundred bucks is a 7" Polaroid Android tablet, I picked this one up, so I could play with rooting and see what they are actually capable of.

After all these years, I won't even touch an Apple product, to proprietary and to darn(dam) expensive.

I guess like a smart phone, you get APPS for a tablet? If so, I know the reputation of Apple Apps, ie, fewer and more expensive. Is your Lenovo a new one? Do you have a model number for it? Is it window or android? What's with only the 3G? Why is there such a huge difference in the price of these tablets?

Re: Ya got to be kidding me- Tablet battery life!

I bought mine brand new, and it came loaded with apps, 3G does not bother me as I really don't use that feature to access the net, I don't like paying for it, but if I need it, I have got it, it is an android tablet. As I said, I am quite pleased with it. I was extremely disappointed when the surface finally came out, because I wanted a windows tablet, but the prices that it was supposed to be and what it actually was were way different. There is such a price difference because Apple and Microsoft charge a premium for their names! The model number on my Lenovo is an A2107, here is a link to the product information on the Lenovo website:

IdeaTab A2107 7" Entertainment Tablet PC | Lenovo (US)

I like mine, but the point is, there are tablets out there is great features for a heck of a lot less than an Ipad or Surface. I looked for over a year, before I purchased on for myself and believe me, I looked at a lot of them. The Polaroid I picked up yesterday also came with a case and keyboard and like I said I paid less than a hundred bucks for it and ended up playing with it all night long, I was up until 3 AM checking it out!

And again, one thing to note, you can change batteries in all of the current tablets out there, you can get a battery off ebay, pop the case and the majority of them are just a plug in affair and that includes the Ipad, a search on ebay returns over 3600 hits for Ipad batteries.

Wow, on the selection of iPad batts. I guess that would not be an obstacle to buying one, however.....

I like the price of the Lenovo. What does it mean to not have 'adobe flash. What does that keep you from doing?

On computers flash is involved in many of the advertisements you get on websites as well as some of the videos on certain shows that you can watch on a computer, example would be Glee on Fox, but after you get used to a android, there are ways to add flash to them, do a search on adding flash to an android. I suspect the flash issue will be resolved in the near future when Google and Adobe stop fighting with each other!

Here is the google search results for flash on android:

https://www.google.com/search?q=and...s=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a

And here is one example of a solution that seems to work fine:

Re: Ya got to be kidding me- Tablet battery life!

Lots of IPad hate out here it seems. But this is more of a religious argument to some. My Ipad is the dreaded 2 years old and still goes a whole day. I have friends with Ipad 1's that are running just fine. In fact I have a IPod Video from 6-7 years ago (this one actually has a HD in it) that is still running strong.. I am no apple bigot - by far. Also recognizing the shortcommings, no Flash and no file system, I am perfectly pleased and use it extensively every day.

I also have an AppleTV which I use daily and get a lot from the integration of the two. My choice goes beyond just the device and it characteristics.

When I was making my choice, I evaluated some of the other tablets, such as the Asus Transformer, Galaxie, etc. but did not find one with the integration and seamless interface. Just the feel of the interface itself fo the others felt inferior.

My point is not to convince someone to buy an IPad. I think you can be happy with any number of different options. But it can't be refuted that there are many many technical and non-technical owners of IPads that love their devices and are happy with them. They can't all be idiots.

Yea, that was probably too strongly worded.

$460 for an iPad 1 ??!?
Who even sells those anymore, the smithsonian is looking for one ;)

I have an iPad 4 and an iPad mini. Love them. Had to be dragged kicking and screaming to Apple but I got so sick of the MS bull. And boot times...

FLASH support has been available for Android for years. It's Apple that doesn't support FLASH but does support HTML5. IMO, you won't miss much not having FLASH support.

I might have not called it right. It is the smaller of the two ipads that BestBuy had on display. 7.9" I believe. It was the smaller one that had WiFi and 4g capability, that was $459.00.

Actually flash was discontinued a while back, you can find an older version, but there is no real support for it, other than a few hackers, but there is no official version of a current flash program available for the android.
