I am working on a 1993 150 xr6. Pulled gearcase to change water pump. Trying to replace the gearcase. I noticed that there is a seal blocking the splines in the crankshaft from engaging with the splines on the driveshaft. Is it possible that the crankshaft/case seal came loose and is floating around there? it is moving freely. How can I fix this problem? Or is it a "less" important seal? Can it be run without this seal?

If its tha one at tha top that you can see by lookin' up in tha housin' its called a "carrier assembly"? Why I don't know. Its a seal pressed inta tha bottom of tha crank and becomes a real pita when it comes out. You can sometimes finagle it around so tha driveshaft will go by it but is a challenge! It really needs ta be replaced and this is only done by pullin' tha power head. I have managed ta put a "blunt point on a "broom stick" type piece dowel rod with a little (very little) grease and got it back in place. This is just a temporary fix. It WILL come out again. It really needs ta be there, especially for salt water stuff. Just make sure none of tha little kids aren't around when ya start!

Dukedog, you say it needs to be there especially for the salt water stuff. Is it a water seal? If it is not in place can it cause me to burn down the engine? Or in other words does it seal the crank case from a vacuum leak?

No. It basically keeps water outa tha spline area. By not bein' in place it will let rust form a lot quicker between tha crank splines and drive shaft splines. Then ya get inta tha part of not bein' able ta get tha gear case ta break loose next time......without a lot more bad words!
