Had a problem at the end of the season where the motor lost power. It would be bogged down at full throttle and like someone flipped a switch it was kick in. Almost like a loose wire or something. I would be a full throttle bogged down and all of a sudden the power would just snap in. Any ideas? At first I thought it might be just two strokes in cold weather as the air and water temps were cold at this point. It started happening after just getting on the water and within a few minutes it would be fine, then after a while it stayed bogged down and wouldn't kick in. Most of the time once it did kick in it would stay that way, then on occasion it would start to little by little. Almost as if someone kept flipping a switch on it...
on that note could it be a control box going away? Just seems odd it would be bogged down and all of a sudden was kick in out of no where. I check the plugs and they were all fine.

Any help would be appreciated. Season is just around the corner. Thanks.

Re: XR2 150 HP power issue

Couple other things to note. Stator, rectifier replaced last year along with a rebuild of the fuel pump. Motor is also a new rebuilt put on last year. It really seemed to only happen on cold mornings or days. Last time I was out it was cold and never really kicked in which is why I am wondering if it could be a switch box. Been reading cold weather will exploit a box that is going bad...

It starts and idles fine. It just happens when I throttle it to up on plane and going.

Re: XR2 150 HP power issue

Engine bog can be caused by a variety of reasons. Fixing/replacing expensive electrical parts on a hunch is often not as good as using systematic troubleshooting to find the cause.

I suggest that you first check if the spark is actually failing when the motor is bogging. You can use an in-line spark tester, induction timing light, or induction tachometer to do this. If the spark is failing, then there are various other tests you can do to narrow down the problem, such as swapping around some electrical parts/wires to see if the problem moves with the part/wire or using a DVA meter and ohmmeter to test specific parts.

If the spark is not failing, then you might try checking for a fuel supply problem. One simple test is to squeeze the fuel bulb to see if it helps when the motor is bogging. Another fuel supply test is to connect a portable fuel tank to the motor to see if that eliminates the bog.

Those with more experience may recognize your problem based upon your described symptoms and give you a better answer. Good luck.

as hk said before a timing light can tell volumes much less save u mucho bucks...cyls dropping at 1800 rpms or thereabouts point to a stator problem.

Low ignition voltage will limit engine RPM, act like it bogs. Rare, but possible that you have a stator problem, a loose magnet in the flywheel could damage your new stator, anything could go wrong.

Follow the directions in the CDI Ignition Troubleshooting Guide available on-line free.

A DVA Meter to make voltage test is THE best method of determining an ignition problem without un-necessary expensive parts.
