wrong gear ratio

How bad would my motor perform if 1:50 gears were put into my drive instead of 1:98? It is a 3.0 merc and Alpha 1 drive.

pretty bad i have the 1.98 and wish it was a bit lower<br /><br />if its true it would explane why your haveing trouble spining the 14 x 17 prop<br /><br />tommays

That is why I am asking tom, after much discussion with my friend/mechanic, we now think he rebuilt my top half with the wrong ratio. He has my boat up there today and hasn't called me yet. It is funny now that we think we have the problem figured out, but it wasn't last week when I was at the lake.
