Wrench type to preload newer style drive gear bearings

I need to reassemble my drive gear bearing assembly. It’s the newer style with no spacer. I took the assembly off of the drive shaft, not separating the bearings, to replace the u joint retainer ring.
I do not have a dial torque indicator and would prefer not to buy one. My click style torque wrench capacity is out of range for this setting.
Could I use a beam type torque wrench and save a bunch of money on this specialty tool or is that a foolish idea?
I searched threads about preloading but found nothing about this. It’s an alpha one gen one, no serial number, cases are likely from 1984, guts from 1998 with very low hours on them (sub 50).
Thanks

If you still have the inner spacer, install it and just torque the nut

There is no inner spacer on mine. I’ll have to pony up for the torque indicator.

Or hire one from a shop.

I spent several days looking around for a loaner or renter with all my diesel mechanic buds and their buds. Something that goes low enough was not to be found. That is a strange bird, under 10 inch pounds and accurate down there. I had zero luck at all and had to buy. I like owning good tools, though.

Me too :D

Just added an nice battery tester to my collection. Not just a 'load tester' (already have one of those), but one of those ones that tells all the percentages, and checks the starting and charging system of the car too. Sexy bit of kit. ;)
