soooo.......... i know that it is not advised as many on here are saying, but...

About 2 years ago I used my 97 TJ sport with the same inline6 to pull my 19 foot bayliner with a 305 and no trailer brakes.

i used this to pull many times at a distance of about 30 miles. I had 4 inches of lift though with 33x12.50's on 10 inch rims where stock are about 7" and 30x9.5. that added jsut a tad more width, but more than anything it essentially geared it down. It did just fine as long as another post said, don't go over about 55 and leave PLENTY of room to stop.

*** I guess I should ask first, is it a 5 spd or an auto tranny?? I had a manual and that helped a ton. I probably would not have tried it with an auto.

there were times that I didn't even have to put it in 4 wheel at all to get out up the ramp. granted it was a gentle slope and very short climb, but anywho-

be sure that your boat is well loaded and the weight is distributed correctly. that will help with any sway, and just take the long down hills a bit(lot bit) slower at the top so that you can always get into it to pull out of any sway. don't worry about the car on your ***, you don't owe on it like you do your boat!! he'll wait. good luck!

ohyeah, tried to pull same boat with my other jeep at the time, an 88 YJ with 4.2, didn't compare. towed twice about 10 miles and never again! guess its a trial thing. i kinda just killed my first points about it being fine huh??!!
oh well, take it for what its worth

Re: wrangler TJ

Hmmmmm. Maybe not.

Though MO has no trailer brakes law, it danged well should. No other state allows a trailer over 3,000# to go without working brakes. Some require them over 1500#.

Don't know what a TJ is rated to pull, but I doubt that it is over 2,000# like your tow surely is.

Towing anything over vehicle tow rating and without brakes is really not cool. Doing it with a short wheelbase vehicle is beyond uncool.

What you did was not only NOT fine, it was very dangerous. Don't think I'll move this.

Re: wrangler TJ

it was actually not in missouri. I just moved here this summer. It did have the factory tow package and it was in the extreme back roads where I might not have seen even 2 cars on the way there. granted it was probably unsafe for myself I understand, but that 55 mph was an extreme. most of the time it was more like 40 at the most. I don't know if your intention of leaving it was more to make a point, or just to continue conversation, but either way, it was the rig I had to tow with, have towed around the farm many times with, and I felt comfortable with the set up. I know I have seen way worse set ups than this, which although by no means may justify it, but I towed it that way for a summer with absolutely no trouble at all. just sharing.

My point was that I didn't think it was an experience that would contribute to good decisions, KC. It might encourage someone else to do the same, and without your good luck.

I have also done some really dangerous things in my life and got away with them, but there is no way I would suggest to others that they were okay.

Re: wrangler TJ

point taken.

i didn't mean to encourage, or discourage, because I am in no position do such a thing. I still consider myself a rookie by all means and was simply sharing my experience while trying to point out some tips if he chose to try. i'm guessing that any of my "tips" he already knows though after re-reading his post and seeing he sometimes uses a little 4 banger pickup. I'm sure any pulling with it has helped him learn alot for future reference.
