WOW!!! only wants to back fire???

just bought outboard 50hp. thats been sitting for a long time, seller stated it starts right up!! but when we try to start it only back fires could any one tell me whare to start?? have manual, but not 2 sure how to set timing??? also, lever for timing is awful stiff?? please HELP!

Crappie.... If it backfires (actually backfires) out the exhaust etc, the flywheel key is sheared due to not being torqued properly, a timing belt is not installed properly if one exists, etc.<br /><br />If, on the other hand, it is simply spitting out the carbs, the carbs are fouled and will require cleaning.<br /><br />Note that it would help if you listed the make and year of the engine.

The first thing I,d check is if the plug wires are on corectly, someone might have switched them.

Sure sounds like a flywheel key shear to me..pull the flywheel and check the key.

hi JOE! thanks for the info!! just bought this on ebay!!! now that i know i'm not crazy,i'm sending it back!!! OH yea, its a 1979 Evivnude,55HP.... with tilt &trim....really wanted to see it run! how much of a job is it to replace the (key)??? thanks again, AL...

HEY JOE REEVES, IT'S A 1979 EVINRUDE 55HP.. WITH TILT & TRIM!! HOW MUCH OF A JOB IS IT TO REPLACE THE FLYWHEEL KEY?? THANKS AGAIN!!! AL..THINKING THAT IT MIGHT BE EASER OT FIX IT THAN TRY SENDING IT BACK! AS I KNOW THE GUY I BOUGHT IT FROM WILL FIGHT ME ALL THE WAY ON SENDING IT BACK!!!!!

If by backfire, you mean a note notunlike sneezing, it would indicate a lean condition that might be correctable with simply adjusting the carburater idle mixture jet screws.<br /><br />On a motor sufferering from inuse it's not uncommon for the carbs to become laden with hardened fuel deposits from times past.<br /><br />Sometimes the sneeze just needs some tinkering with.

is it "BACK FIRE" or "AFTER FIRE"??? I have the same problem on a 33hp johnson year about 80 (she´s afer fireing).

Flwheel nut torque must be exactly 105 foot pounds. Any less will result in having another key shear. Be sure to clean up the flywheel and crankshaft tapers if they're damaged.
