They are comparing an under performing motor (225 Yamaha) to an over achiever (225 E-TEC).
If I remember correctly there is something like a 20-25 HP difference between the two. The low end torque would be to the advanatge of a 2 stroke as well in this test.
I'm not sure I saw the same video as dingbat, but I'm not too impressed by the video anyway. Doesn't seem to me that twin 250 hp motors should have trouble pulling that load. However, I've never captained a boat like that. My biggest work boat is a 21' Stanley with twin 135 hp Mercury optimax motors. Just a puppy in comparison.
No sound but the 2 boats it's pulling at 22.8 mph is a 26' Mako and a 22' Whaler. In the end it's dragging the Whaler around with one motor with no indication of speed but it pretty irrelevant.
The point of the whole thing is not speed or the fact that it can pull the two additional boats.
It’s about low end torque and what’s impressive is that they where able to get all three boats up on plane. You need a heck of a lot of low end torque to do that.
I run a 22’ Walkaround that weighs somewhere in between those two boats. It takes all 225 hp I have bolted on the back to get me up on plane. To get three boats up on plan with basically twice the HP is impressive.
Prop advantage. That boat is rigged for towing and power as evidenced by the tow pole...... I will bet it is propped the same way. I am not overly impressed and it was just a novel example of what other manufacturers do not demonstrate.
If you have ever participated in towing a boat you will also realize that a longer line is easier.
I watched the etec and yammie where the tech sank the yammie video. Don't know the gear ratio's of the two engines, but I'd bet they were real close, hp is real close, but look at the differences in pitch.....the tech had much less and for this kind of stunt pitch is your enemy. The yammie was defeated before the race ever statred.
