wouldnt turn off

ok, my engine (82 merc 50hp) for the most part runs good.. i think i am overpropped some, but i just got cheap tach, i intend on getting it installed tomorrow. the last few times i have taken it out, for some reason - only sometimes -when i turn the key off it wont shut off?! turning the switch on and off repeatedly it still wont turn off, but doesnt seem quite as healthy? in the off position.. if i play with the throttle in the off position it will die.. always starts right back up, and runs flawlessly with the key in the on position.. 80% of the time it shuts off like normal.. my guess is the ignition switch is junk? any ideas guys?

you're probably on the right track just curious will it start with the key in the "off" position to test you would either have to try to pull start it or you could "jump" the starter solenoid with a remote starter switch besides the ign switch also consider a faulty or dirty connection where the ign switch connects to ground good luck
