i have a 1982 carver 2667 santacruz,,,260 mercruiser 5.7,,i just started getting water inside my engine, (milky oil) to make a long story short the engine runs great> after i shut the engine off i get water in my #5 cylinder and #3 but not as much...i checked my compression on #5 and its 130lbs...and the other cylinders average 120-130lbs...i removed my intake manifold and replaced the gaskets...i checked my exhaust manifold and riser and this is what i found in my starbard riser IMG-20111008-00215.jpgIMG-20111008-00216.jpg i found this hole and 2 others like it but not as big. my engine idles and runs great no knocking...when i shut the engine off is when i hear loud water gurgling...then i get water in my cylinder again...would this be where water is getting in? (sorry about how the pics posted i didnt know how to fix it)

Chris...........[/QUOTE] thanks...i been racking my brain so much..i couldnt understand how my engine start and idle great with steady idle and then to find water in my cylinder...so would it be safe to say that my engine exhaust push the water out with the exhaust pressure keeping the water out while it was running,,which is why it ran fine..then when the engine is shut off (now no exhaust pressure) the water enters through the hole in the riser and into the exhaust valve?

UPDATE>>i didnt feel i totally satisfied that i got to the source of my water intrusion. so i took the intake manifold off and both heads and had a nice surprise waiting for me.....both of my head gaskets were blown and water was leaking into cylinders #4 #6 and #3 and #5...i will post pics of the head gaskets tomorrow...i still dont understand how my engine can idle as if nothing was wrong...those cylinders mentioned were full of water...no rust in any of the cylinders or the block, thank god...i got my shop vac out and vacuumed all cylinders out and totally drained my oil pan...i gave every part a nice oil bath with a clean oil soaked rag.. as well as all cylinders and fill the crankcase with oil,,so hopefully i can keep the rust away...i will be taking the heads to the machine shop tomorrow if their open...

Ouch!

Idle was probably smooth because cylinder pressures aren't high at idle. You may have run into performance problems under load, mostly just a lack of revs.... Unfortunately V8s tend to behave nicely even up to the point of self-destruction....

sorry i took so long to reply,,had to work some overtime for some extra cash....well i took my heads and intake manifold to the machine shop along with the head gaskets so i can get their input on these gaskets...turns out that the head gaskets were for automobiles not marine and partly to blame for some of the water...the machine shop check the heads and the right side heads had a 2" crack in it running beween the two valves of cylinder #3 ..sorry i left the head gaskets at the shop so i didnt get pics...the outcome..i traded the 2 heads for 2 ready to go rebuilt heads new valves and springs...the intake manifold was in perfect condition....the machine shop ordered and gave me half off of a complete set of fel-pro marine gaskets...and also ordered me a set of head bolts charging me 30 bucks for 2 boxes of head bolts...now im off to my marine to clean the engine block and paint it....any advice from the veterans here and to properly cleaning the clock of all saltwater? and i also had my 4bbl rochester rebuilt....

Hell yeah please do lol. If you're feeling extra ambitious and want to document a sort of step by step as to how you reinstall the heads and your process of painting the block id love to see/read it.
