i have a '55 15hp on a 14 vhull alum , had to put controls at middle seat to plane when alone..before on tiller all it would do is stand on end, and wait for the wind to catch it an blow it on over.(never did, fixed it 1st)
I once owned a 12 footer with a '56 10HP Johnson and it was a scary ride to say the least. Can't imagine what the result would be with a 20HP. But then it all depends on how heavy the boat is.
My friend runs a 20hp Merc on a 12' Springbok tinny and it goes like a scalded cat but actually is a pretty reasonable motor for the boat, plus at WOT it's a blast! If it's too much power just don't throttle it up all the way, those are light motors.

Safety depends on you the driver, its better to over power than under power, the trim pin must be set spot on, at WOT with only the driver it will be twitchy but with three on board you will appreciate that extra power and use common sence.
