Would I notice a difference if...........?

I currently have a 1973 Evinrude 25 HP powering a nice little 4 metre (13ft) RIB.

I might be tempted into buying a 2001/02 Mercury 25 HP motor.

Would I notice much difference in the power output due to, amongst other things, the change in power output declarations: ie, 1973 rated at the flywheel, 2001 rated at the prop.

Is there really a great deal of difference in the ratings between the two given the relatively low power outputs anyway?

Just thought I'd let someone scratch their heads over this one too :D

The difference is small, Bro. Under 3hp.

If you use a GPS for speed measurement you might measure a difference.

I am assuming that your 'Rude is in good shape and tune.

Good luck. :)

Thanks JB, the evil rude is okay: I found a crack in one of the coils and I'm awaiting a spare. She can run great for 30 mins then bogs down. I'm assuming it's just the coil which will be a lot cheaper than a new engine!

I think it depends. JB says 3 hp and sounds about right to me. That would be 12%. I have noticed that the rudes run well and don't break often, and are easy to fix. I have also noticed that a lot of other 25s will outperform the omc 25s. Most noticible under load. You would see it on a gps and it would be 2-3 mph in some cases on similar boats.

Personally I would just fix the one you have and save some money unless you are running long distances with heavy loads. If that were the case my prefrence would be 3 cylinder suzuki. After that yamaha or merc. I don't care much for the the goofy throttle linkage on the merc, but some walleye guys love it because they can stay on top of a dime.

I have a honda 25 now, and it keeps up with about everything out there but the suzuki. 3 mph is not much to me, but it might be if I were guiding every day. I am most interested in getting back to the dock, and overall I find most 25s to be quite reliable (if you take care of them).

Re: Would I notice a difference if...........?

Thanks for the responses so far guys. Must admit I like the 'rude but I think she needs a bit more tinkering with to get spot on. She may also just need run-in: she's been sitting for close on thirty years and was only used for a couple of weeks back in 1976! Took the carb off to clean it and that was total waste of time: as clean inside as the day it left the factory and no lies! Plugs look like they are overheating but they also seem to be the wrong plugs (despite being supplied with the boat/engine at the time so I don't know the full story). Maybe just save my pennies and wait, the season is almost over here anyway and the weather is pretty lousy (probably because we have a Bank Holiday coming up!)

Don't forget to factor in physical weight. The newer the motor, the heavier it can be. That new-ish 25 might be heavier enough to offset any power advantage it may have. Just keep the old one...
