Would a torn water pump gasket cause a problem?

Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum and looking for some advice.

When I replaced the water pump impeller on my 2006 Optimax 150 DFI the other day, I somehow tore the water pump gasket (the top one just underneath the impeller) when I tried to insert the impeller into its housing. Because I did not have another new gasket handy I just used a small amount of grease to seal the tear and then put everything back to the position. I then started the motor in my driveway and it discharged a good stream of water. My question is whether this torn gasket would cause any problem when I run the motor in a high speed on the lake? Do I have to get a new gasket and redo the whole thing again right now or I can wait till I change the impeller next time, may be in a year or two? I understand a small leak from the water pump may result in lower cooling water pressure, but other than that whether the leaking water would damage other part of the motor ?

thanks.

I would replace the gasket. I know the earlier model Optimax need to have a optimum working water pump.

It would be best to replace it rather than have it fail when out enjoying a fun day on the water and possibly causing more troubles. A lot easier to fix it at home than elsewhere. JMO

Thanks for the advice.
One last question:

When a boat is running on the water, is the water pump of an outboard submerged underwater or it stays dry?

thanks.

On a boat that is up on plane and setup correctly the pump is partly under water at times as it depends on the water flow over the LU over the pickup screens or slots. While at idle or slow trolling speed it would be under the water and the water pressure keeps the pump primed and covered in water
Most all pumps are located just below the cavitation plate and with the boat on the water running you can look its location in the water. The cavitation plate should be no higher than 1" above the very bottom of the boat. JMO
