Re: Worried about launching with my truck

I launch a 14ft fiberglass runabout with a 50 merc ...total load about 1500 pds with trailer, behind a mazda b3000 pickup 2 wheel positrack; with no problem on a concrete launch. I do have 4 big plastic buckets with lids in back that I can fill with water in case I need the traction. Just keep tow vehicle in low and start gently....if you do start to slip fill a few buckets and keep them at the rear against the tailgate.
Just the same I don`t think a light aluminum should be any problem.

I pull an 18 foot bowrider out with chevy trailblazer that has a 6 cyinder engine in it. I dont need to use 4 wheel drive to get the boat out. Just comes right up. Its a ramp that has a fair pitch on it also. You should not have a problem with a 6 cylinder truck. A 4 cylinder S10 would be another story.

You should be ok. Might want to add a few sandbags to put some more weight over the rear wheels

I have a 1995 short bed S-10, 5 speed, FOUR CYLINDER that I used to pull a 17 foot glassport, a 19 foot winner and a 21 foot poontoon....it was a strain but done it for 5 years before moving up to something bigger. I don't recommend that kind of abuse but in your case a 14 foot boat will be a cake walk.

The key questions are 1) how steep is the ramp, 2) is the ramp gravel, sand or paved, 3) do you have rear tires with a rather grippy tread pattern (do they actually have a tread pattern -- as in are they bald). 4) Add a little weight -- as in have someone sit in the bed behind the axle if possible. On an average ramp you will have no trouble. Your boat weighs next to nothing -- all things considered.

You did not say if your truck is a short bed or if automatic or stick. In either case, if I can do it with 3500# rest assured you can do it with a 1500# boat. I used some pretty steep ramps too. With gas prices the way they are don,t let someone talk you into getting something bigger....YOU DON"T NEED IT!!

I tow a 25' boat with a 2wd ford and have no problems on any rmaps I use.

I pull a 17' Bowrider with 140 HP I/O using a 2 wheel drive Ford Ranger with automatic transmission and the 3 liter 6 cylinder engine. No problems coming up the ramp.

Re: Worried about launching with my truck

If you worried about traction on the ramp, try backing down the ramp with no boat and see how if feels. Chances are the boat and trailer won't make much difference since it's only an aluminum boat. There's one ramp here that's so shallow that there's no way to get my 14' boat onto the trailer without backing my truck in to far the front tires are wet. I usually just load the boat by hand there. I disconnect the trailer, hook up the boat and pull the trailer under the boat with the winch, then pull the trailer up to the truck. The way I see it, if I can pull a 14' boat and trailer up the ramp myself, it's no real load on the truck. I don't figure my boat and trailer top out much over 800lbs. Keep in mind its a rolling load and other than it's weight, it's not pulling the truck rearward very hard. I would suppose a couple of big guys could exert far more force rearward on that truck than a rolling trailer could in that situation.

The buckets are a good idea for quick traction, you can dump them back out when your done. I have a 1994 Ranger which has a cap, the cap alone adds a lot of weight but if I need weight, I just toss in some extra weight. I've never yet needed to. The largest boat I've launched with this truck was a 19' V hull with a 110hp outboard. It did the job, better than expected. I find my Ranger had better traction than does my Dodge van, which tend to spin even on flat ground when its wet. Using the Dodge, I've more than once had to get a few buddies to stand on the trailer tongue for added traction when the ramp was wet or muddy. It's got highway tread tires on it since its a work van which don't help it's lack of rear end weight.

any vehicle can handle a 14' aluminum boat. Don't over-think it.

Re: Worried about launching with my truck

I have a 1999 S-10 RWD with the 4.3. I pull anything from a 10 footer to a 21 footer at 3500 pounds.

If you get on a slippery ramp, the 4.3 with its torque and no posi-traction WILL spin the rear wheel--doesn't matter about the weight of the boat and trailer.

If this happens: Simply ride the brake lightly to equalize the load on both rear wheels and go easily on the gas pedal, feeding in only enough to overpower the brakes. She will come out easily. In a worst case scenario, have a couple of people jump into the bed or throw some rocks into it until you clear the ramp.

Part of the problem is the TIRES. With the original equipment Tiger Paws, if it was cloudy or if you were thinking about rain, they spun. They had so little traction that on one ramp, with all four wheels locked, my 21 footer pulled the truck backward. I kept a couple of wheel chocks in the bed after the first time.

Re: Worried about launching with my truck

I have a similar situation with my truck and boat.

I have a 22' sailboat with trailer, and that combo weighs about 2700 lbs.

My truck is a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500, with the Cummins diesel and an automatic with 2WD. I have to be careful and not get real happy with my right foot, or I risk breaking my tires loose, and losing traction. When I haul out, my left foot is on the brake and I ease off the brake while I apply some throttle. As I feel the truck move forward I release the brake completely and take it easy on the throttle until I'm off the ramp and move to the prep area.

Re: Worried about launching with my truck

At some slippery ramps, I have seen full size 2wd trucks struggle horribly trying to get tiny 14 foot tinnys out of the water. To me the thing about having inappropriate equipment is the stress you feel the whole time out on the water as to the problems and difficulties you may encounter when trailering up. I've lived it and it's no fun. 90% of the time, no problems, but the 10% make you wish you had different equipment. That said, we are talking about a tiny boat and you can certainly make sure conditions are good before you unload thus shifting the stress to the ride to the ramp. To me 80% of the reason trucks exist is for their ability to utilize 4wd. I am baffled that 4wd isn't standard on at least full sized trucks. Similarly I am baffled at SUV owners who don't tow anything. I must be easily confused.

because a lot of people do nothing but tow things other than boats with their trucks in decent weather. 4wd drive adds additional weight, complexity, and cost.

I have never used 4 wheel drive on pavement much less to add towing capacity. I tow plenty of different things with a lot of different vehicles. All of them are 2WD.

Tires are the weak link. My T100 will outpull my F350 unloaded on asphalt because the Bridgestones have more bite than the factory skins Ford put on.

Re: Worried about launching with my truck

Well, up here in the northeast, a lot of people buy 4WD for their peace of mind. They forget that in bad weather it is SKILL in driving the gas and brakes that count, not overall traction.

Sure, 4WD will get you going but it ain't gunna stop you faster and they don't realize that. See them off the road all the time. Even with 1/4 inch of snow.

Me? If the weather is bad enough that I need 4WD---I don't go. Not worth driving with the crazies.

My S-10 is 2WD because at the time I bought it, I was doing some long distance commuting and I did not want to pay the price of higher gas usage. That more than offset the summer use at the ramps.

And as I have mentioned before, when I taught my kids to drive, I taught them how to skid. I took them into a snow covered parking lot and showed them just what a front and rear wheel skid felt like in both front and rear wheel drive. I taught them to feel it in their butts and react immediately. You can't think about what to do; when you feel the vehicle starting to go you must just do it immediately to recover. Otherwise you will be off the road just like the other guys.

Re: Worried about launching with my truck

Should not be a problem at all. If you get any issues put some weight (people will do) or something else over the rear axle. Letting a little air out of the rear tires can help as well. (pump up again after though)
