put the 1956 30 hp in a barel today and started and ran well.now for the good part ,other than slow speed the motor likes to kick out of gear.its not a loud clunk it just pops out.if i hold it i can feel it kick every once in a while.i will read the manual but what do you,s think?worn dogs or out of adjustment? if the dogs are gone is there any possibily of getting new ones?could they be machined?will any other years work in their place?

Good news! Part number is 375783 and is still available for around $60US. Or try to find one used. Lots of other years fit, but I don't have a common parts manual to tell you which ones.

You can't fix it. You can try, but it won't last long.

I took that part number out of my 1956 Johnson 30 hp parts manual and plugged it into the ishop Marine website (its a great resource for finding out what parts are still available or what the superceded part number is). ishop shows it as a current part for $57.40 US list price. I'm not suggesting you buy from them since this site is hosted by iboats and also because you are Canadian, but it is a great source of information.

Did I not send you a copy of a parts manual for a 1956 Johnson Javelin 30 hp? If not, PM me your email and I'll send you a .pdf copy. Its the same as your motor except for the cowl trim and it has no tiller handle.
