Hi everyone. I've got a 69 Johnson 25 HP Seahorse. The forward gear and clutch dog lugs are worn and it slips out of gear. I'm thinking about getting the forward gear lugs machined to square them up and probably replace the clutch dog. Has anyone done this before? Reverse gear is in great shape and I just don't want to spend the money for a new gear set.
Jerry

Re: Worn Forward Gear

What would the cost of machining vs the cost of gear replacement be. It seems that for a few extra dollars you could be at a new running state vs. the patch that machining on a worn gear would provide.

hello
yep I have done it. will work for a while if the machinist is good.
last fwd and clutch set I bought was a kit and rather expensive.
I would reccomend the gear and dog over a repair but I understand finances :)

Yep. Done that too. When you cut the lugs you cut thru the hardness. It'll last for a while -- not long. Then youre back to where you started. Less the money you spent.

what Dhadley says. its a temporary repair. I machined the dog as well. made it for a few more paychecks. I was lucky enough that the machine work was free.

Forget the shortcuts and fix it or leave it at the current state. In the end the money will be to your benefit. You know the shop lingo... pay me now.... In this instance you'd pay twice. If you cannot afford to boat w/out scrimping on the bill, save the money and invest it such that you can boat later at a much higher standard. Worry gets you nowhere.
Tim

By the way, my rank is not high on this site. However, my life education has proven that the shortcut only leads to a short term gain. If that is your wish, go for it!!

Thanks for the words of wisdom, guys. I really don't plan on keeping this boat, So the "boating in a higher standard" doesn't apply. Will look for the best deal I can.
Jerry

You can get good used parts from www.twincityoutboard.com for a lot less than new ones... probably less than machining and they will last a lot longer.
