Re: Worn Carb Adjustment Screw..Need New

Is it the needle valve: the long thing that has the point on the carb end and the adjustment knob on the other?
If it is that, what is the problem with it?

High speed adjustment needle?? Those normally have a pretty blunt end. It would have to be grooved really bad to make any noticeable difference, and even then it would only make it overly sensitive. It acts like a faucet, screwing it in closes off the flow, screwing it out increases the flow. That is going to happen, groove or not.

If it is really bad, chuck it up in a drill press and use a file to dress the taper.

Its the threaded long needle.High speed adjust knob. The low speed adjust is fine. It has a definate point and taper. The high speed needle is shouldered . At high speed I cannot dial her in..loosing 2500-3000 rpm . Will troll all day long though. Thanks Tash I will check a few shops in the area for salvage.

Hold on. There is probably nothing wrong with the needle. Have you cleaned the carb? Replaced the packing?

Yes...There is a definate "shoulder" as if it were forced when seated .(tightened) I have a manual showing what it shold look like..and its not needle shaped as it should be. I found this motor in a pile of junk..used it all last year..changed points condensers coils..etc..It runs fine..accept when i want to open her up.I get to just past 1/2 throttle and it wont pull..its pushing..I try to adjust high speed and cant dial it in..to rich..the needle wont allow a fine adjustment flow of gas.it hits the bulged area and I believe its allowing to much fuel in. I pulled both needles and found the high speed is the problem. Will search for one..

Whatever you say is ok with me. But if it screwed in far enough to cause a ridge on it, then it should be capable of screwing in that far again. And if it goes in that far, it should completely close off the flow of fuel making it way too lean, not rich.

The high speed needle is the shorter of the two, isn't it? And the one with a blunt end. The idle needle has a sharper point and is easy to damage.

You do have the thick gasket in there around the main nozzle...don't you?

Here are a few pics...I'm thinking maybe it should be stubby...?

F.R.
Your probably correct in it needs packing..The gasket may be disintegrated(?)
That would allow uneven flow of fuel?.. I picked out some silvery flakey putty or cloth in the threads..assuming this is the gasket material that was shot..

Yep, looks like you have the correct needles, and somebody has crammed it in pretty tight. You might fix it up a bit with a drill and file as I suggested earlier.

302984 Gasket, if bad, will bypass fuel around the high speed needle valve.
