Wood stove questions??

Ok i had a few questions about a wood stove. My mom and dad are being nice enough to let me put my boat in their gerauge for the winter so i can work on it. I need to get something in there to warm the place up whyle i work. I have in my house now a wood stove that the previous owners of my house left here in the basement. Its not hooked up and ive never used it. What im wondering is will this stove if i take it to my parrents gerauge, be enough to heat the gerauge? Its like about a 1 and a half car one with just the one door. You can fit 2 cars in it if there was nothing on the sides of the gerauge. Ive never used or installed a wood stove before so im not sure how much heat that they put out. Was wondering if there was a rule of thumb as to the area they would heat based on the size of the stove? Im not sure if you can compare that to BTU's or whatever. This is an idea im just kicking around. If it can heat the gerauge id hook it up for them and let them keep it after this winter. That way if my pop wanted to do things in the gerauge during the winter time it will be there for him. I cant hook it up here because i think my home owners insurance forbids me to hook it up in the basement where it is. And im not going to hook it up upstairs cause we have a good heater. Any tips on wood stoves? Thanks a lot!!

If it is a standard size stove, yes it will more than heat your garage. Burn dry wood and watch you clearances on the stove pipe, you would not want to burn up your boat.

What's your source of firewood? Around here a seasoned cord is running $250+ delivered. Free wood is of course best, but you want to spend your time working on the boat, not cutting and splitting cordwood.
For convenience, I'd consider a propane fired space heater. One small vent/intake through the wall of the garage. No stovepipe/ clearance issues.
A Metalbestos chimney for a woodstove will probably run you $2/inch.
If you do go with the wood, be sure to get it permitted, inspected and approved by the Fire Dept.

It will work fine..BUT going through ANY wall or roof, ya better have double wall Stainless special purpose vent pipe through ANY framework (not cheap).....or it will get plenty hot, hot enough to call the FD..

it would not take much of a wood stove to heat that area. With wood you will have heat running after you need/want it, its not like gas or electric you can't just turn it off. The space heater (above) is better for what you want, good luck be safe, dont burn down mom and dads home

I suggest getting a certified chimney sweep to inspect your woodstove. It would be very bad to install it only to find out that it could be bad. The sweep can also tell you how and where to install it in the garage.

Most woodstoves will heat areas of 1,000 square feet or more. A 1 1/2 car garage is about half of that. If it is uninsulated and no ceiling, it will still do a great job on heating it up.

My problem of using wood heat in a garage is the risk factor. Lots of flammable stuff is usually in the garage. Even material that you use can be combustable. If your garage was closer to the 1,000 square foot size, the woodstove would be less of a risk factor.

Like I said, getting a chimney sweep, or someone who has burned wood and has installed stoves can help you a lot. Good Luck, and please don't take any shortcuts as these fixtures can and will destroy things in a flash.

Talk to mom and dads insurance man and he will explain wood stoves to you. Also UMC calls for something like 36 inch clearance from combustible surfaces. That will take up half the garage. Small portable space heater would be your best bet.

+1 Also check for building code guidelines before you install the wood stove.
