Well I really got my self into yhis one.Had a punky spot on the floor of my 20' tempest cuddy.Figured I would recarpet at the same time since the carpet was totaled anyway.Who would use foam back carpet any ways?Well I lifted the carpet.....Wow,lots of wood rot right down to the stringers.OK i say,not a problem. We will gut the entire boat and do it right.Even the foam was 4" deep in water on the outboard side of the stringers. No weep holes anywhere to the bilge. No wonder I got wood rot.Thank god the transom and engine mounts are OK.Looks like I wont be back on the water for awhile. At least its going to be done right this time if I have anything to say about it.(and I do)LOL

Well with all the rain every weekend and gas nudging a loonie it will probably be cheaper to repair it than fill the tank. I paid 99.9 for a litre on the road on Monday got home its 83.4, glad I only put enough in the truck to get home from the cottage.

Yep,your right,and with a 52 gallon tank it isn't getting any cheaper.Might have to trade it in on a 14' with 6 H.P. (NOT)

Hey Catchem...that's really too bad about your floor but at least you got the right attitude about fixing it. When I had my 20' Tempest we had moved up from a 15' Crestliner with 5 gal tank and 65 Merc and I wondered what I had got into now with a 50 gal tank. Now today with this 35' Thundercraft and a 800 plus litre tank, I don't know why I even bothered putting it in the water this year, gas was $1.09 at the marina last weekend!

Well the way I look at it Bob,there's no sense crying over it.Just roll the sleeves up and get at it.Not much we can do about the gas prices either, but I'm not giving up my boating. You gotta have something to do in this world that you enjoy right.Isn't that why we "Work to live not live to work"?

Ok,I was ripping out the original white carpet in the cuddy(very wet and black mildew under it everywhere.)Noticed my bow deck wood is rotted also.Bottom fiberglass is not sticking to it.My question, short of cutting out the whole top and replacing it,is what ideas does anyone have for doing this type of work?I really don't want to cut if I can help it.

If you can pull out the rot from underneath you can leave to deck skin intact, and bond new wood to it with expoxy resin, and then fibreglass mat from underside also.

I must be getting old Catch. Was a time when I'd look on a problem like that as a challenge and get on it. Now I just want something that safely puts me on the water as often as possible. Were that fixer-upper mine, it would soon be someone else's...even if it meant giving it away and going back to a 14 footer with 6HP.

Gotta commend your attitude though. Good Luck!
Bob

Hey Catchem,
I live in Sarnia as well. A friend of mine
does the exact type of repairs you are talking
about. Might be worth your while to let him look
at it and let you know what he thinks.
His name is Eric, his business is Stef N Kar and
you can reach him at 336-2295.
He also does excellent engine repairs at a fair
price.
Good Luck
