I have a friend with a wooden drift boat. His dad made it several years ago and gave it to him recently. The boat needs refinishing on the bottom. We are unsure of what to use on it. We figured marine paint after sanding it but then what? Epoxy?...Fiberglass?... Don't want to make it too heavy. Please help in letting us know what to put over the paint. Thanks, mike

Hi, Mike. If you put anything besides paint on the bottom, put it on first, under the paint, not over it. Is there any reason you can't just paint it and not do anything else?

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

evidently he has a leak in the transom. It has fiberglass on it right now with paint over it. I suppose we should put a fiberglass patch over it. Or should we just put a layer of epoxy over area then paint it?

Hi, Mike. Sand off everything in the area of the leak. Put new fiberglass over the area, then paint the whole works.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

mike, make sure that you use epoxy resin, as opposed to polyester resin. marine paint is quite expensive; ace hardware makes a polyurethane porch paint that works real well. comes in differant colors too. lightly sand your new patch; prime it with kilz exterior primer, then hit it with the porch paint. apply it with a good brush. 2 or 3 coats. this will last a long time, before you need to do it again. careful with the resin; study up on it, before you begin.
