Won't stay running when put in gear.

1993 Johnson 70 hp motor. VJ70tlets.

The motor stalls when put in gear sometimes it will sputter.

It will sit and idle at 650 to 700 all day long in the barrell or on the muffs, or in the lake.

It has been converted to NON VRO.

It has the following done to it.

Carb rebuild three times over. They are spotlessly clean, in and out. I have replaced every fuel line from the tank all the way to the carb.

New Primer hose and ball.

Compression at 100 even on all three which seems low to me, all the other triple's I have run have been 125 to 135 psi.

I also noticed three seriously fouled plugs.

The carbs were reset to 2.5 turns out after rebuild. I don't believe it is running overly rich.

Spark is hot and blue, and jumps a 1/2" gap on all three.

Hey Sig! I didn't know that you had a 70!

sounds like you may be running rich. 1st thing to check before messin' with the LS needles is link-n-sync...I wonder if the throttle plate is open even at idle (which it shouldn't be).

double-check the FSM for the recommended idle RPM...i'm pretty sure you want to be at 750 when in gear...which means higher at idle...guessin' those idle needles may be out a bit too much (my 70 is fixed-jet so I can't say for sure).

Hey chris its on the toon its a 1993. Its the one weve been messing w forever. And also y ive not been working on the starcraft doesnt matter how high i set the idle it dies upon putting it in gear

ah, propulsion for the 'toon!! I'd still bump that idle-up a bit after verifying link-n-sync.

I did a quick search and found this guy had similar issues and it was related to the spark advance.

one other thing, has the t-stat been replaced recently?

I give a + 1 for the link n sync too, not advancing the spark as the butterflies open will do that.
