I have a 1988 40hp evinrude outboard. I think the starter maybe bad. I had the armicture replaced and new brushes. The battery is good and the hot and ground wires are new. When I try to start the motor the starter won't turn the motor over. I can pull start the motor with no problem and it runs great. I took the starter to a reliable shop and they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Any suggestions?

bay boat
there is a solinoid between the battery and starter it could be bad if you have a VOM test the voltage at the starter while someone trys to turn it over. also the soliniod should "click" when engaged. if it doesn't "click" the wireing to may have lost connection. also the battery terminals could have lost connection. look for bad connections, broken wires in the start circut. let us know what you find.
Richard

Howdy Bay Boat. RWise has you on the right track. Your most likely cause is a poor connection in the starting circuit. The very high current needed by the starter requires that every connection be flawless.

Disconnect, clean and reconnect every connection on a heavy wire between the battery and the starter and between the battery and the block of the engine.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Thank you Richard. We tried yuor suggestions. It didn't change anything. We purchased a new started. That worked. I'm going to take the old one back to the repair shop and see what they can find.

I don't think I would EVER use the shop that tested the starter again! An example of "its not my job" or "I don't get paid to care"
