I have a 1985 Merc 115hp inline 6 that won't start.I have had no starting problems in the past, didn't run to good at times but always started right up.Cranked the engine for several minutes,10 to 15 seconds at a time and the engine wouldn't fire, not even a sputter.Bulb was solid and no flooded smell or excessive fuel leaks.Pulled the plugs and they were pretty much dry.Don't know if I had spark but suspect fuel feed problem.Took the input hose off the pump, squeezed the bulb anf fuel came gushing out. When I took the filter out of the pump,no fuel in the pump housing to speak of.Any ideas?Took the pump apart, did not see anything unusual but have never had one apart before.Appreciate any thoughts or ideas.

Pull the fuel line from the pump, that goes to the carbs, and crank it over.If no fuel comes out,get a kit for your fuel pump.Solved, good luck

You must check to see if you are getting spark first. This is a must do... If you want to narrow it down to a fuel problem, get yourself a spray bottle and put some pre-mix in it and shoot some into the carb. throats. If it fires at all, you do have spark and it is most likely a fuel problem.

Go to the Engine FAQ Section.

The article on "Outboard wont start" will guide you to the cause.

Re: Won't Start

It appears that I have spark, pulled plug #3 and #4 and held them against block and it appeared to be a good spark.Pulled the fuel pump off and looked at diaphram, did not see anything wrong with it.Next step to spray mixed fuel in carb throats and see what it does.If it at least sputters or starts I will need to pull carbs off and give them a good cleaning.Plugs do not seem to be very wet after trying to start engine,in fact they are almost dry after a minute or so of cranking engine over.If the primer bulb gets fuel to the carbs but not into the engine would you not agree that it would have to be the carbs? Thanks for the help so far.
