Hi, I'm trying to diagnosis my 1986 Mercruiser 140 h.p. 4 cyl I/O, because it won't start.

The symptoms: It will crank for one second, then the "click click click" of the solenoid takes over.

I think the battery is ok. It charges fully on the charger, and the voltmeter shows 12v at rest and about 9 or 10 when it cranks. I'm also getting this voltage at the solenoid.

Is the starter the most likely defect???

Thanks
BRIAN

Re: won't start

Before you condemn your starter...make certain you've checked all the battery cable connections first. Are they shiny clean and tight? Don't forget the battery ground cable at the engine block... You might want to try jumper cables to jump your battery. How old is your boat battery?

What you describe does lean toward a defective starter...but you'll be very unhappy if you replace it...only to then find a weak link in your battery circuit. Marine starters are not cheap! Some automotive electrical shops will static and bench test your starter if you do end up pulling it.

Good luck...keep us posted of your progress.

Walt Oh...and if you do end up replacing your starter...NAPA Auto Parts (and other auto parts stores as well) do now carry a huge assortment of marine products. You'll pay much less than if you went through your local Mercury Marine dealer.

Thanks Walter, I owe you an ice cold. You were right...one of the wires was corroded and slightly loose...cleaned it and she started right up! A slightly cheaper fix than the $266 starter that I was anticipating.

Thanks for the help!
BRIAN
