I have a 2002 Yamaha 90hp 2 cycle. I turn the key and nothing happens...no click, no instruments. I have check the following;

Battery new and fully charged
Cleaned all battery connections
Checked fuse on motor...good
Voltage at starter relay is 12 volts across terminals
Check ground connection on motor
Tilt & trim works

Could I have a bad starter relay or is it the ignition switch?

Thanks for your help

Re: Won't Start...No Click

You could try tapping on the starter solenoid and starter. might work, might not. Could also be the ingition switch or wiring or a bad connection. With the instruments not working it sounds more like a wire harness problem, I would double check you wire harness plug under the cowling also. Usually when i have this kind of problem its a fuse, but you said you've already checked them.

You may have tried this but... Is it in nuetral? also key switches are common problems. Oh and one more the kill switch could be telling it not to start. Hope this helps

I have an '04 and have a similar problem - the Neutral Safety Switch seems to be causing my difficulty...

If you are not getting power to the instruments along with no start you either have a blown fuse or a bad switch. Both are easy to check with a volt meter.

Or the there is corrosion or bad connection in the main harness plug at the engine.

Re: Won't Start...No Click

Went out to check the switch. Disconnected the two wires that go to (sorry about this description, don't know what it is) round rubber thing that is mounted below the switch on the switch assembly. No voltage accross the leads. While in the process of checking i noticed a very very small amount of smoke coming from the switch for just a few seconds. When I turned the key to check for voltage, the engine started. Reconnected the wires & it continues to start every time.

What do you think happened?

Re: Won't Start...No Click

you let the smoke out,now its gonna die.
trust me.
that round rubber thing is a choke switch or a kill switch at key on choke switch will only have power from one side to ground will not have voltage acrossed it, if you did you would have a short in the 10 pin main. the white kill circuit wire will have a voltageonly when the switch is open and the engine running.

most all the older 703 boxs and a lot of the older switch panel assys had a toggle switch choke, later models used a push to choke switch.
that wire is not used on your 90.
what control box do you have and yes something isoverheating in the switch, not nessasarily a switch issue either.

Re: Won't Start...No Click

It is a push in key to choke. Should I just replace the switch or the entire assy?

Again, thank you so much for your help.

Re: Won't Start...No Click

the switch may have push to choke, your engine doesnt use a choke.
push it all you wish, all it does is push in and out.
the wire for it does not exist on your engine harness.
sounds like you had either lost 12V to the switch or 12V on the yellow wire out of the switch. could be due to water in the switch or a load on the yellow wire.

Thank you again. I'm sure it's result of water. The switch assy faces up on the console & is always getting wet.

Again, thanks for taking the time to respond.
