Ok so now i turned the key and the starter just clicks. jump across the terminal with a screwdriver and it cranks right up. which leads me to believe the silonoid is ok. took the starter out bench tested it and it worked just fine. could my ignition switch be bad for some reason?

If you jumped the solenoid and it worked wouldn't that mean its bad?? sounds like a bad solenoid i would try a new one see if that works.

no if you jump the solenoid it could also be that your not getting enough juice to your ignition post

Re: wont start just clicks

I assume the OP tested the solenoid by jumping from the big battery-side terminal to the small terminal that comes from the ignition switch. That would indeed indicate that the solenoid is ok. (If you jumped between the two big terminals, then of course you would be bypassing the solenoid).

It sounds like you have two conflicting data points: Solenoid clicks when you turn the key vs. hotwiring the solenoid (as described above) works.

Double check electrical connections at battery and solenoid. Measure voltage at small solenoid post when you turn the key to ensure 12v-ish.

Beat on everything with a wrench. It wont help, but it might make you feel better.

Good Luck.

You have two starter solenoids: The key activates a slave solenoid, which in turn activates the starter solenoid. If you hear a click, could be the slave, not the starter solenoid. Go back there and follow the y/r wire from the starter back to the slave solenoid. Have someone hit the key and see which one clicks. Look in the "adults only" (#2) for how to troubleshoot your starting.

ok well its offical. im and idiot. the ignition wire and the purple wire which i believe runs to the coil were switched. crossed them back and bam. took it out to the lake ran great. for about hour or two. then when putting back on trailer it didnt want to fire when i tried to start it. it turned over but wouldn't fire.

Just to make sure that all is right now: You should have two wires going to the + side of the coil, a purple/yellow wire from the starter solenoid, that provides full battery voltage to the coil during starting, bypasses the resistance wire. The other is the purple resistance wire that provides reduced voltage to the coil when you are running normally. Your hard starting might be because of a bad connection between the p/y wire and the coil (could be a million other things too) You can check it to make sure it is getting full battery voltage during stating. good luck.
