Electric start works fine to start a 78 Evinrude 85 hp. But, when you turn the key to the off postition, the motor doesn't die. Have to choke it till it dies.
Do I need to tear into the control or check out the linkage on the motor? What are the most likely places to find the fault? Could be various problems but what are the easiest to check out before I start taking things apart.

Thanks

Don't take apart yet.

If memory serves me correctly, the black/yellow wire on the pack has to be grounded to shut down. Try doing this at the pack with a jumper lead while running. If it shuts down, you know its a switch/wiring issue. If it doesn't shut down with a jumper lead, check for bad grounds to the pack and coils. Be sure the ground connections are clean and tight. If the grounds are all good, and the engine still won't shut down with the jumper lead.....bad pack.

:)
