My 1988 Cajun Fish & Ski OMC 3.0l will not shift out of forward when running. It will shift fine into reverse from neutral and back into neutral and then into forward. Just once in forward, it will not come out. However, when not running it shifts out fine!! This is my first I/O so, I'm a little confused. Any advice is much appreciated.
Thanks.

Shift cable might be out of adjustment, or a NEW lower shift cable is needed.

check to see if the engine kill switch is operating correctly.... when you go to put it in gear or take it out of gear there is a set of points attatched to the shift cable that when pressure builds on the cable kill the engine for just a second to let the gears disengage its been a while so i forgot where it was on mine but i think somwhere up near the carb throttle controls if you push the points lever with a screwdriver or hand it should die way back when running .... hope this helps

I hope it is this simple!!! The engine kill switch seems to be working fine - kills the engine anyway. I'll try this at the weekend, thanks.
