Won't shift into reverse or neutral

I have a 1985 35 hp mercury. Last weekend we went for a cruise on the boat and everything was great until we went to dock. The motor would not go into reverse to slow the boat down or go into neutral. Forward only.
I was told more than likely the little brass piece down on top of the foot that connects to the shift rod stripped out. Trying to find out what this part is called and if anyone has a part number. I tried adjusting cables already but nothing.
Thanks for any info.

A high RPM at idle will prevent the motor from coming out of gear as well. She should idle at 900RPM or less.
Mercs usually have an idle stop setting on the throttle arm. When in neutral, the throttle should be pushed up against the throttle stop. You might check that and adjust the throttle cable to push against it in neutral.

Step #1 is to drop the lower unit.----Operate shift rod and see if it shifts.----Check gear oil.----Then repair as needed.

When I turn prop by hand it clicks in one direction and turns power head in the other no matter if it's in reverse or neutral. Idle speed is perfect. My guess is lower shift shaft is stripped. Heard the original ones had a brass piece that tend to strip out. I'm going to drop the foot tomorrow to look and see and might as well replace water pump impeller while I'm in there. Thanks for suggestions.

You would be well served to follow Racerone's suggestion. Fixing a gearcase takes special tools and knowledge. It is best to make sure it needs it, and to price a SEI gearcase replacement.

I’d check the cable is actually still joined at both ends. Look at the engine end and see if you can shift by hand.
