I Have a 2000, 125 hp ELPTO Mercury. I Put a new impeller in got it all back together and now it won't shift into reverse. Took it apart 2 times and double checked everything. Anyone have any ideas? The gear shift was in forward when I took the lower unit off.

The prop will spin freely in neutral only one way in reverse and both ways in forward with clicking sounds I believe.
what ever gear your prop is in F, N or R then position your throtle lever to match and fasten the splined coupler, you should be good to go.

The shifter on the boat was in forward. You must also have the lower unit in the same gear.

16. Check shift operation as follows:
a. Place shift lever in forward gear. Gear housing
should ratchet when propeller shaft is
turned clockwise and resistance should be
felt when propeller shaft is turned counterclockwise.
b. Place shift lever in neutral. Propeller shaft
should rotate freely in either direction.
c. While rotating propeller shaft, place shift
lever in reverse gear. Resistance should be
felt when propeller shaft is rotated in either
direction.

Thanks everyone I'll give it a try. Also one more question. I watched a you tube video on impeller replacement. Apparently there is a seal that slides over the drive shaft and goes into the top of the pump housing. The impeller kit came with a base, gaskets two "O" rings about one inch in diameter. Does an "O" ring slide over the drive shaft and sit on top of the pump housing?

That's known as a "slinger." As far as I know, an impeller kit will not come with a new one of those, it's a separate item. You just resue your old one.

Didn't have a slinger on it when I took it apart. Any idea what the part number is. I can't find it on iboats.

The crowleymarine web site will have a part number. Most any Merc dealer will have one. I always got one in my impeller repair kits. Not sure why you didn't.

Hmm, never got a new slinger in my pump or impeller kits, but my OB's much older.

Post a serial number so we can find the right diagrams.
