wont shift into forward after about an hour on the water

I have a merc alpha 1 gen 2 3.0ltre after about an hou r onthe lake it wont go into forward. The first time tthis happened reversed back to dock, about a 30 min trip and at the dock tried forward again and it worked fine. Checked it on land the next morning and eveything was good , so out to thelake again everything worked for about an hour, it doesnt stall when trying. To push lever forward butrevs engine . I have checked the linkage and its good.

I have read all the "wont go into forward" posts butnot finding the same symptons. Most put dies when shifting to forward. Mine revs when shifting to forward after about an hour on the lake,
