Hey everyone I sold a pontoon with a 1986 evenrude 110. The people who bought it called me yesterday from the lake said the motor was running fine for about 10 min. then died and wouldnt restart his wife was texting e she said it wast getting fuel , any way they texted all day and into the night asking questions, I told hi when he bought it there were no issues and I had done a compression check and it was good, she texted last night said he did a compression chek and it was only 90 ponds on each cylinder, I told her that was good as long as each cylinder was within 10 pounds. I dont know whats wrong with it without looking and I feel bad for the I think they want to bring the boat back for a refund, should I be responcible , we ran the engine on the muffs when they bought it and they were happy. And any ideas on the engine problem isnt there a fuse on the engine , wold that cause it to turn over but not start Thanks

Fuel vent blocked or closed, fuel pump shot? Is the fuel line even connected? I sold a boat to a guy who did just that, took the portable tank out to fill it and never connected the line. I met him at the lake, his buddies laughed hard until I pointed out that they didn't figure it out either.

Kill switch knocked loose? I saw a man fli[p out about a brand new boat that would not start, when he had pulled the lanyard off and hadn't noticed it.

Pinched fuel hose? I saw a man put a tacklebox in the motor well and pinch off the fuel line once,

You have no idea what they did with the boat after it left your place. Their 10 minute ride might have actually been 2 hours of pulling a 2 man tube with throttle wide open and refueling with no oil.

I would go and look at it and see if there is something simple and obvious, one of the rookie mistakes everyone who boats makes at first. Unfortunately these rookie mistakes sometimes kill motors, and if that has happened here, you can't do much about that.

Work with the guy as much as you can, but if you can't see that you did something that caused his issues or sold him something that wasn't right, I don't thing a refund is called for.

Another great reason to list anything, not just boats, as an "as is" contract that both sign! Unless you could see what really happens to a boat after you sell it, you have no idea what they could have done. So you may have to work with him on this, but I think you also got a "lesson learned" experience as well. :sorry:

The wife texted e this morning and said they would like to bring it back but couldnt untill saturday. I afraid they tried to start it with starting fluid and really messed it up.

If it was me and I was sure I was upfront about everything I would not issue a refund,I would offer to take a look at it on their dime.Boats take maintenance,

In my opinion a used boat is a used boat. As long as you sold it with good intentions and they sea-trialed it, then they own it.

I make it clear when I sell something used that it has a 30-30 warranty, 30 feet and 30 seconds.

Check the spark with a spark checker set at 7/16 " open air gap.

This is a somewhat over stated issue, yes you can do damage, but it's not from just seeing if it will fire. If you keep running it on standard starting fluid you will eventually use up all the residual oil in the crankcase and at that point it may cause harm. There is also starting fluid with oil in it so it's safe for 2 strokes, at least as safe as it can be.

Is the fuel hose from the tank hooked up going the right direction? Do they know the difference?

I have quite a few parts motors here. They were not supposed to be but it was I who made the decision to purchase them. I have never requested a refund.

I am always up front with a buyer, here is what I am selling here are things I have noticed that you may have to address in the future etc. But to be honest if they wreck it because of their neglect...it is their problem. I have bought motors knowing the risks and took my chances. But if I mess something up I am not going to go whining to the seller.

You're not a dealership, you didn't offer any assurances other than it worked at the time of sale. I think they've got a bit to learn about boat ownership to be honest. My money would be on they were on the water for at least an hour and not 10 minutes, for all you know they filled up with dud fuel. If you give an inch, they'll take a mile.

I once had a phone call 6 months after selling a car because it had an oil leak. People will try anything on sometimes.

I once traded in a car at a dealership and the guy who bought it from THEM tried to complain to ME that it had a rusty fender. People will try anything to pry some cash out of your wallet.
