Won't go past 45mph...

My buddy just bought 2 (same model) 2005 Yamaha Waverunners. Initially, no problems. They would both top out around 58-60mph. Now the one won't go past 45 mph at full throttle (no noise, no smoke etc.). The Runners have not been beached or mishandled. Any things to check? Suggestions?

Thanks

what kinda yamaha?

a 4 stroke fx series?

if so. check the air filter for oil soak...easy to overfill the oil in thems machines...

R&R the plugs.....

check the pump for foriegn material....look close from ft. and back with a good flashlight......check impeller for any dings.....

that'd be where i'd start at.....

if it's an 4 stoke fx...

if they are 4 strokes I bet he hit it on the head with the oil in the air filters,, very expensive filters too, and real common issue,, even the dealers sometimes overfill the oil and ruin the air filters,, it just kills top end when that happens,, good luck removing the air box screws ,, they use thread locker on them, real pain in the butt to get them out the first time.
if it isn't the problem look for exhaust leaks fumes in the hull will also kill top end.

Thanks Guys.

It is a 4 stroke. Not mechanically inclined but will popo the seat and look for anything losse, etc.

Maybe suggest a "tune up" since I don't believe its had one since owned.

bad plugs on a 4 stroke will make it run slow and rough
