On saturday I took my 88 Baja with a 140hp Volvo out for a little cruise as I have been doing for the past few weekends, the boat started right up, I let it warm up a little, got in it and cruised aroud the lake doing about 35-40mph as usual. I slowed down to a slow crawl and everything was still ok, as I approached the dock, I went to put it in neutral and it didnt engage, I then tried reverse and much to my amazement it went forward......So my problem is, my boat will not go into neutral or reverse, I had to shut the key off and cruise into the dock and luckily I was going slow enough that I didnt cause any damage to the boat. At the moment it is still in forward and when I turn the key the prop is turning. I am a new boat owner and do not really know too too much about what the problem could be. I have been told it could be the cable or the linkage or it might just need to be re-adjusted....Any information anybody can provide will be helpful.

You probably have a broken shift cable. You need to pull the back cover off the drive and see if the shift linkage moves.
Yours pushes the cable to go into forward, and has to pull to get back to neutral or reverse. A broken cable will push, but it won't pull..

don't know on the volvo's my mercuiser you have to pull the drive, but it's not that hard to do. A friend of mine who works on these all the time does them in about an hour. Takes me three, but . . .
