This is kinda hard to explain but I've always recieved really helpful hints before so I'm gonna give it my best in explaining. Hopefully someone can help. I have a 77 55hp Evinrude motoe and Kingfisher boat. We were at the lake and ran thru some shallow water and hit a log or something. Didn'y know it was only 3ft deep. Anyway after that I had trouble getting it to go in gear. It would throttle up before the gears would catch so I figured I had sheard a pin. Come to find out my motor doesn't have a shear pin. When I disconnected my cable from the motor I could put the prop in gear by hand..so there's no problem in the lower unit. When I move the shifter it throttles up and the gear cable moves in and out...but when I hook it all back together-NOTHING. Just the throttle works. I adjusted the cable from the beginning of the threads to the end and then back to the original position. Still no luck. Can anyone help??? Please the cats are biting and crappie will be soon..I NEED MY BOAT!!!

Re: wont go in gear

catfish, we are in the same boat, mine is a 75 85hp evinrude, ran up into some weed and shallow water at night and thumped something. my motor will shift by hand but it is very stiff. seems like its not getting the hydraulic assist or something. i dropped the lower unit (needed to do the water pump anyway) found my shift rod a little bent up(straightened it up)shifted fine on the bench, so i reinstalled it and i still have the same problem. didn't want to get any deeper into the L/U so i adjusted my control box so that i can get forward but have to pull the cowl and rap the linkage for reverse. this is getting to be a pain in the ass, motor is on a small houseboat.I have drained and flushed the L/U a couple of times,no change. i'm guessing now that my hydraulic pump is the problem but i'm told they are hard to find parts for. i don't have a clue how all this relates to hitting something,(no visable damage)I'd guess we are just overlooking something.somebody help us, i ain't right if i don't get my river runs and i love this old motor
