I have a 74 25 hp evinrude , I was running down the creek when all of a sudden bam we start stopping and the motor tachs up, thought I just broke a shearpin but I didn't. It will go into forward but it just revs up when you give it gas and also neutral and reverse work fine had to use reverse all the way home.

Re: wont go forward

hmm the only thing besides mis adjustment of shifting rod i can think of would be part# 31 0316501 SHIFT, Clutch dog on this picture.

http://www.boats.net/parts/search/BRP/JOHNSON/1975/25E75B 1975/GEARCASE/parts.html

that is assuming I guessed the right engine.

well that is where i would start after verifying that everything was good in the shifting dept on top (where the lever is) and then I would likely pull the lower unit and check for operation again with it off manually moving the shift rod. if still not working then into the lower unit gear case I would go.

the reason I choose that order is simplest things 1st cause I can think of a lot of things I would rather do then get covered in sulphanated gear oil.

good luck, and hope it is a simple and cheap fix.....

oh also hoping someone comes along and says "hey it's a ***** just twist this and it will work fine" :) remember I am a rookie here.

Well that is a head scratcher for sure. You say it shifts into forward gear, just can't apply power. That would indicate the shift linkage is ok, or at least operational if not totally ok. You also indicate it will drive in reverse and by assumption the water pump works. That rules out a broken drive shaft.

So, I have to ask, when in forward and in no-drive mode, is it making a bunch of chattering or grinding noises? That indeed would indicate a very worn out clutch dog and forward gear.

However if it is just a smooth slippage with out grinding, it certainly points to a spun prop hub. What I can't understand is why it doesn't slip in reverse. Well, whether or not that is the case, it is the first thing you should check. Make a mark on the prop nut, and a second mark on the propeller, aligned with the first mark. Then run the motor till the suspected slippage occurs. Stop the motor and check the marks. If no longer aligned, the hub slipped and you just need a new prop. But if still aligned, repeat the test--there is a slim chance it stopped slipping in the same position.

When I took the prop off the shearpin was sheared. So i guess that was my problem it is just weird it would go in reverse.
