Wonky tachometer

Well fellas, after 6 or 7 months of trying to get my boat into the water, tomorrow's the day. Going to slip her into the Sea of Cortez and run her around close in, unless she really proves herself, then we may head out to Tiburon Island, around 35 miles round trip. Everything is working properly, except the tach. The engine seems to be idling at certainly near the correct RPM"s, but the tach is reading about a 2000 RPM's at idle. When I shut her down the tach sticks at around a 1000, then slowly returns to zero. I have removed the wire contacts, cleaned them and put dielectric grease on them. It still does the same thing. Is it just a bad tach or is there something else that may affect this? Thanks in advance...Mark

Adjust the pulse setting on the back (typically 6, I think, for J&E.) See if your battery is charging. A defective rectifier will affect tach operation as well as charging (replace the rectifier).

Thank You, It is charging, I have an ammeter. That makes sense because I had to remove the dashboard, it seems like forever ago, in order to replace the helm cable. It is highly likely that I accidentally moved an adjustment. This place is the greatest...Mark
