2004 Honda 8 hp 4 stoke. This barely used engine starts up and runs fine except no water comes out pee hole. Changed impeller ( which looked new) and thermostat which had some corrosion. Blew out every line and port possible. All clear but still no water expelled. Stumped! Any suggestions I haven’t tried.

did you bend the impeller legs in the correct direction? If you matched the prev direction it may have been wrong?

Did you disassemble the water pump to check the impeller again? I once had a 6HP with similar symptoms, shortly after I had put in a brand new impeller. When I took the water pump apart, there were a lot of calcium-like deposits stuck to the inside of the water pump. They were not there when I put the new impeller in and some of the deposits were on the impeller too. I cleaned it all off and reassembled and it worked like new. No idea how that could have happened with a week or so, especially as I boat in pretty clean water. I was stumped but it was a simple fix.

That’s certainly strange but I was planning to drop the impeller again so I’ll look for that thanks

Dropped the lower unit again and found new impeller was chewed up and housing now has what looks like melted rubber all in it. I can’t understand what causing this new situation! Just bought this otherwise pristine engine from a guy I thought was honest. Shame on me for just checking compression and not running it before buying. Don’t know what my next move is other than spend a fortune at a Honda outboard repair shop. Help!

If it was run for any length of time (SECONDS!!) without water, then damage to the impeller would happen. Clean all the old rubber out of there, make sure there are no scratches in the pump housing where the impeller contacts it and put in a new impeller. Did the impeller have a key or pin that held it from rotating on the shaft? Was that in properly?

After new thermostat and impeller was installed ( which can only sit properly on the flat side of cam drive) it was run for about 45 sec as soon as it didn’t pee it was shut down.dropped unit again to find impeller ruined as well as housing getting its cursed

How are you watering the motor? Bucket or muffs? Often buckets aren't deep enough for water to reach the impeller.

It certainly sounds like that impeller wasn't getting water. I would get a new water pump (impeller, cup, wear plate if it's marked up), don't forget to grease the cup and wear plate before you put it back together. The blades on the impeller won't always correct themselves if they're pointed the wrong way so be sure they're correct when you assemble it. Just spin the drive shaft with one hand while lowing the cup. When you test it make sure the water in the bucket is above the water pump. Also don't rev it too much or air from the exhaust will prevent the pump from picking up water.

Pet peeve, it's an anti-ventilation plate. Cavitation happens when water boils from low pressure, usually at the tips of the prop blades. It will erode the prop if it's bad enough. Ventilation happens when the prop gets mixed up with air from above the water or from the exhaust.

remove your motor from bucket and hook up to a pair of those squeeze muffs. cheap insurance and what they will do is allow you to force water into the pickup without the motor running. Also when you install the new impeller use a lot of petroleum jelly. Its harmless and will rinse out after running a short time. And muffs will **** off the neighbors so make sure you run it at at least 7am :) might wanna grab ear plugs

Is there a flush port that you connect a hose? (Might require a hose adapter).
If so, flush with stat removed, then try running.
Is it possible your water inlet screens are plugged? (On my nissan the inlets have screens)

Which method was used to test that 17 yeal oldie motor run on fresh or salt water ? barrel, muffs ? The impeller's shaft must be turned CW when installing a new one in. If the impeller issue persists after the lower leg has been properly submerged in a deeper water level, remove the lower leg's water intake screen located under the AV plate and clean it at both sides with a stiff bristle toothbrush and detergent, water intake screens are huge collectosr of filth, debris if not looked after, check, clean the passage located between the screen and the lower pump's case/housing for any obstruction...

Happy Boating
