Got a last minute chance to go and see the olympic womens hockey game between Russia and the Swiss last night.

Was a good game, went 1-1 into overtime and finally ended with a shootout. The Swiss took the shootout 2-1. I'm glad the Swiss won, they had a better technique and played well as a team. The Russians were strong but played a little dirty in IMO.

The video at the bottom is of the winning Swiss goal followed by the last save against the Russians.

Yeah it was great. My first experience at an olympic event. We were sitting right in front of about 100 Swiss fans so the cowbells and cheers were in full force!

Maybe you can help me answer a few questions?
I heard rumors around the web that prices for tickets were outrageous for the hockey games, well mainly usa and canadian mens hockey, is that true?

And was this arena built specifically for these games or is this the home of the canucks?

I like watching the the games but it seems like so much money is spent to build all the necessary venues that will sit mainly unused after the games are over...Its a shame to see.

Congrats either way, from 1 hockey fan to the next...I would love to say I sat and watched an olympic hockey game.

Vanoc has built a auction portal where you can re-sell your tickets. When it first came on line, the asking prices were stupid but it seems to have settled down a bit. But there are not a lot on the site as most are going to the events.

It's GM Place, where the Canucks usually play. They just can't call it GM place for the Olympics. Corporate sponsorship and all that. They are calling it Canada Hockey Place. Some of the games take place at UBC in Thunderbird Arena.

Most of the venues will continue to be used. Some Outside of the Olympics, there is usually one major event happening each year and the lead up to the event needs space. I know the bobsled run at Whistler and the Richmond oval have been in use for over a year and more events are planned.

But some will be taken down. And some stuff will be sold off. Vanoc is having an auction after the paralympic games are done of all the office stuff..

Sounds like the biggest issue will be the athletes village. Going to be a condo sale but it doesn't sound like the best buildings.

Congrats either way, from 1 hockey fan to the next...I would love to say I sat and watched an olympic hockey game.

Me too. But between the travel time and the money I just couldn't do it. And I'm only 4-5 hours away by car.

Yeah the mens hockey tickets, specifically the medal games and anyone with Canada playing were very expensive. It's just supply and demand; 10,000 to 20,000 tickets available and several hundred thousand people that want to go.

Some of the events were reasonably priced, for example the game I went to tickets could be had for about 100 each.(thats about what it costs to see a Vancouver Canucks game) We were lucky in that my GF's boss gave her 4 tickets at the last minute so we didn't have to pay:D.

Most of the venues for the olympics were already here beforehand. GM Place, BC Place Stadium, UBC Thunderbird arena, the curling rinks etc.

The new venues like the richmond speed skating oval are certainly not going to be sitting unused. Not to mention what it adds to the skyline of an otherwise boring looking city.

There are also many, many free concerts, events, the various olympic houses, street partys...you name it. The entire downtown core is like mardi-gras every night!
