Bought a used OMC Tachometer (172674) old style with needle for my 78 Johnson 55hp. Supposed to work

3 wires on back tach . Grey, black, purple

Seems straightforward Black=ground, Purple=12+V, Grey=grey/yellow wire on terminal block for a quick test

Hooked it up and needle seems to move backwards. What have I done wrong?

Do I have the grey wire wrong ?

Re: Wiring used tachometer

Your wiring would be what I would assume to be correct except for the signal wire. Not sure about grey/yellow wire. There should be a signal wire (grey) stubbed in the control. If it is, then hook it up there, otherwise I think its supposed to wire up to one side or the other of the rectifier. Also you need to verify the pulse setting on the tach versus the pulse setting your motor puts out. I don't know if that would cause it to move backwards, though...

For a quick test I just hooked it on the engine. I know what you mean on the pulse setting adjustment but there is not one for this tach. Really seems to be fairly straightforward. The grey/yellow from rectifier hooks directly to the grey from the stator and a grey that runs to the engine connector down the harness to the control. I think I was ripped off on the tach. Must be junk

That model of tach had a dial for setting pulse.

I was just going by the number I was givin by the seller. There is a number on the back of it 122550. I swear there is no dial on the back. Since it didn't work properly I started smacking on my hand while the engine was running. The needle was always bouncing like it wanted to work. After a couple of minutes of messing with it it seemed to "start to work" . Not sure what exactly happened but I will give it a try at the lake and see how it does. Probably won't last long.
